Engine Block Heater - Install Procedure

SUBJECT:
MODEL 170.447 (ENGINE 111.973) SUBSEQUENT INSTALLATION OF ENGINE BLOCK HEATER

An engine block heater is now available for the above-listed model. The attached Work Instructions no. 364 describes the installation of the block heater.

Note:
Customers should be advised that installation of a block heater in this model is at the customers expense.

Procedure

1. Remove lower engine panel.

2. Drain engine coolant by first attaching a 14 mm inner diameter, 1500 mm long hose (arrow, Figure 1) to the drain plug (1) in the engine block and then loosening the plug. Drain coolant into a suitable container for reuse later.

3. Remove core plug (arrow, Figure 2 [on left side of crankcase]) with a 22 mm 5-point swivel socket from underhood (vehicle lowered).

4. Install block heater using rubber O-ring from the installation kit and not the alloy washer supplied. Tighten block heater with a 46 mm socket

Tightening torque: 70 Nm

5. Attach electrical cable to block heater.

6. Route cable (3, Figure 2) up to the heater hose (1) and secure cable to heater hose (1) using cable ties (2); from heater hose, route cable along A/C high pressure line to front of vehicle using cable ties as needed.

7. Route cable plug to a convenient location as per customer preference. Secure cable and plug with cable ties.

Note:
Ensure that cable is routed away from moving engine parts and sources of high heat.

8. Close coolant drain plug.

Tightening torque: 30 Nm

9. Reinstall lower engine panel.

10. Test coolant for sufficient antifreeze protection, refill and bleed cooling system. Pressure test system for leaks (Figure 4).

11. Run engine. Check for proper coolant level (arrow, Figure 4).
