NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

REMOVAL
1. Remove front wheels.
2. To remove the upper shock absorber mounting, clamp the spring. Service and Repair
- Install clamping plates (01b, 01c) tool No. 202 589 13 63 00 and clamping unit (01a) tool No. 202 589 01 31 00, or equivalents

WARNING:
^ Risk of injury from being trapped or crushed when working on preloaded springs or spring bodies


NOTE:
^ Only use approved clamping devices and if appropriate also screen off the danger area
^ Check special tools for damage and function, (visual inspection)
^ Wear safety gloves

3. Using wrench tool No. 124 589 00 09 00, or equivalent, remove upper spring strut mounting
- Discard self-locking nut (11e)
4. Unclip clips (A) for ABS speed sensor cable on bracket (B)
- Remove cable (C) on bracket (B)
5. Unscrew spring strut (11) on steering knuckle (33) and remove
- Discard bolts (11i) and self locking nut (11u)
5. Using a suitable hook (arrow), secure steering knuckle (33) to prevent it from tilting away
- Do not subject brake hose and electric cables to tension
6. Remove rubber mount (11c)
7. Inspect shock absorber/strut. Testing and Inspection

INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse order, noting the following:
- Replace self locking nut (11d)
- Attach boot (11f) to rubber mount (11c)
- Replace self-locking nut (11e)
- Install and slightly tighten upper bolt (11k) until the surface of the steering knuckle abuts the spring strut on the inside
- Tighten bolts (11i) and then tighten upper bolt (11k)
- Replace bolts (11i) and self locking nut (11u)
- Install and slightly tighten upper bolt (11k) until the surface of the steering knuckle abuts the spring strut on the inside
- Tighten bolts (11i) and then tighten upper bolt (11k)
- Perform alignment check. Refer to "Wheels, Tires and Alignment". Service and Repair
- Tighten the following components as noted:
- Self-locking nut for fixing spring strut rubber mount on front end: 20 Nm
- Self-locking nut for fixing spring strut on front end: 80 Nm
- Self-locking bolts for fixing spring strut on steering knuckle: 110 Nm
- Self-locking nut of clamped joint of spring strut/steering knuckle:
- 12 x 1.5 mm: 110 Nm
- 14 x 1.5 mm: 200 Nm
