Driver's and front passenger's seat
remove. Service and Repair
Sliding/tilting roof
open.
Battery negative terminal
disconnect and cover battery.
Coolant
drain. Cooling System
Air conditioner
empty (recycling).
Washer system
remove.
Air collecting box
remove.
Suction and pressure lines on expansion valve
remove.
Coolant hoses (3 pieces) on connection stubs of heat exchanger
separate and seal openings (parts kit 140 830 01 27).
Sealing cover for module box
unscrew and remove.
All modules in module box
remove, using special tool part no. 140 589 01 33 00.
Upper part of module box housing
unscrew and remove whilst detaching diagnosis socket and air hose.
Nuts (16) on front wall
remove (3 pieces).
Vehicle
raise.
Screws on the steering coupling on steering gear
unscrew and remove steering shaft from steering coupling.
Shield on the front right floor assembly
unscrew and disconnect plug connector (X4/10).
Foot support in front passenger's footwell
remove.
Vehicles with airbag:
Red test connector/plug connection (X11/13) in front passenger's footwell
separate (plug and withdrawal aid). Air Bag Systems
Steering wheel
remove.
Center console
remove. Service and Repair
Floor covering on front left and right
remove. Service and Repair
Heating and air duct (2) to rear area nozzle
remove.
Insulating mat above airbag control unit
remove.

remove.

remove, by unclipping cover and removing screw (2 pieces).
Cable (17) at release handle (18)
detach and route through. Detach plug connector on parking brake.
Foot controls for foot-operated parking brake (6) in footwell
lay down.
Control cable (7) for shiftlock on foot controls of foot-operated parking brake and at ignition lock
unhook and expose.
Ground cable in driver's footwell (A pillar)
release.
All lead connections in area of center console
release and expose.
Plug connection (X49/2) on left of transmission tunnel
detach.
Fuse box
open.
All plug connectors from cockpit harness to the fuse and relay blocks
detach or separate and pull leads into the interior compartment (footwell).
Cover for recirculating air filter (8) on the lining under the instrument panel (front passenger's side)
remove.
Connector for basic module in module box
remove, then unclip right plug half and open plug connector (figure 1).
Leads no. 20, 39, 40,41
unclip (figure 2).
All lead connections from cockpit to the contact plate in front passenger's footwell
detach and expose.
Screws on right-hand crossmember (11) (A pillar)
unscrew (2 pieces).
Nuts (9) for air conditioner box (10) in area of front passenger's footwell to front wall
unscrew (2 pieces).
Brace (12) on right of transmission tunnel to crossmember (11)
unscrew (1 screw, 1 nut, M8).
Bracket (21) for air conditioner box support on transmission tunnel
remove.
Nut (9) for air conditioner box (10) in front passenger's footwell to front wall
unscrew (1 piece).
Brace (13) on left of transmission tunnel to crossmember (11)
unscrew (2 screws, 3 nuts).
Crossmember (11) at the console in area of instrument cluster
release (3 screws).
Screws on left of crossmember (11) (A pillar)
unscrew (6 pieces).
Handle (14) for engine bonnet cable (15)
unscrew and unhook cable.
Both condensate water discharge hoses on left and right of transmission tunnel
remove, note installed position.
Shift lever
move rearwards.
Cockpit (1)
withdraw, whilst raising and removing from the vehicle to the left with the aid of a second person. Remove the end of the cables at the same time.
Cockpit (1)
lay down or install in the assembly locator (figure 3).
Installation
install in opposite order. Follow installation note.

Before installation, the gasket (26) on the air conditioner box to front wall must be replaced (figure 4).
