Symptoms, Body Noise - General
Noises on bodies can arise for different reasons. The remedies listed provide information of a general nature and can require additional work in some cases.
Cause Remedy
Spot weld noises
loose spot welds (metallic knocking) Part flanges slightly and lubricate, possibly caulk.
NOTE: If there are several loose spot welds in a seam a thorough check and possibly repair is necessary.
Paint tear-off noise
Paint breaking down on transitions, connection Treat joint faces lightly with lubricant, part no. 000 989 26 58. After solvent has evaporated, a permanent
points of body parts due to body distortion wax film also forms in narrow gaps. In special cases, lubricate whilst avoiding contamination
Noises from foam parts
Foam parts make contact and rub together or rub
on another part of the equipment A permanent space must be created between the points where foam parts make contact e.g.interlayers of flexible material (felt strips, part no. 000 983 17 10)
When installing foam parts the surface contacting the body (reverse side) of the foam part must be treated with lubricant, part no. 000 989 26 58 (this applies to foam parts which have been removed and are to be reassembled, and to replacement parts).
Noises from rubber
The rubber seals on doors or the trunk lid rub Check door clearance, adjust if required. Check sealing frame, possibly replace or clean and rub with talc.
on their contact surface. Check contact surface of sealing frame on the body and clean.
Wind noise
When driving quickly wind noises can occur on body These leakages can be found more easily by the smoke from a flow testing tube. To do this, doors and
parts where the air flowing past is deflected. Likewise windows are closed and the heater fan is operated at maximum output to produce suitable pressure.
if air turbulence results from a cavity. Such cavities The suspect positions are subjected to internal air pressure and the smoke continually checked from
(pipe formation) arise for example when a sealing outside by an assistant. Adhere to correct assembly of individual parts.
rubber does not make full contact in a small area.
Furthermore leakages, e.g. at door seal frames,
cause wind noise.
Buzzing noises
Buzzing noises at particular engine or vehicle Secure cable controls which buzz with cable strap to existing lines.
speeds can occur due to the transmission of
vibrations so that they may occur far from the
actual source of the noise. This must be taken into
consideration when trying to detect
the source of the noise.
Sheet metal noises
Noises can occur when metal parts make contact 1. Direct the sheet metal parts away from each other so that a permanent distance arises or
due to body distortion. 2. glue in interlayers and thus prevent contact or
3. press sheet metal parts slightly away from each other and wax with lubricant, part no. 000 989 26 58.
NOTE: Avoid damage to surface of bodywork.
Noises caused by foreign bodies
Foreign bodies located in cavities. Determine position of foreign body and - as far as possible - remove or secure with adhesive, e.g. MB-Universal Sealant or similar. The suitable material can be introduced into a cavity through existing openings. In special cases additional holes may be necessary, which must be subsequently treated with preservation agent and sealed with suitable plugs.
NOTE: In each case a test has to be made as to where the foreign body is missing from and it - or possibly a new part - has to be fitted again.
