Seat Belt Tensioner: Service and Repair
Removing and Installing Seat Belt with Belt Tensioner:1 Belt end fitting
2 Sash guide fitting
3 Automatic belt retractor
R12/1 Left front emergency tensioning retractor (ETR) squib
R12/2 Right front emergency tensioning retractor (ETR) squib
WARNING: Uncontrolled firing of airbags, side airbags and emergency tensioning retractors poses an accident hazard. Testing and installation should be accomplished or supervised only by properly trained personnel. Store airbags and side airbags with opening surface pointing up, do not expose to temperatures above 100 °C. Interrupt electric circuit when working on units.
WARNING: Do not disassemble automatic belt retractor. Accident hazard from tensioned spring. Never use oil or grease to eliminate noises. Opening automatic retractors voids warranty.
1. Move seat all the way forward, move backrest to vertical.
2 On model 202 up to June 30, 1993: Disconnect and shield ground lead from battery AND disconnect SRS test connection (X11/3).
On model 202 as of July 1, 1993 and model 210: Remove ignition key.
3. Remove door sill moldings at front and rear.
4. Remove paneling on B-pillar.
5. Remove cover on seat belt end fitting (1) and unscrew bolt. (See Torque Specifications below for installation - Use special tool 001 589 66 21 00)
6. Unscrew bolt on seat belt guide fitting (2). (See Torque Specifications below for installation - Use special tool 001 589 66 21 00)
7. Disconnect connector from ETR (Emergency Tensioning Retractors) squibs (R12/1, R12/2).
8. Unscrew bolt in automatic belt retractor [3] and remove retractor. (See Torque Specifications below for installation - Use special tool 001 589 66 21 00)
9. Remove automatic belt retractor (3).
Installation Notes:
Pay attention to different versions of belt retractor (for left/right) and ensure that retractor is properly seated in arresting device.
Noises in the automatic belt retractor when the belt is rolling up are normal as a result of the design. In the event of complaints, exceptionally loud noises can be eliminated only by replacing the seat belt with emergency tensioning retractor.
CAUTION: Never attempt to eliminate noises by oiling or greasing. Opening automatic belt retractors invalidates the warranty.
If the seat belt is replaced together with the emergency tensioning retractor, the defective components must be disposed of properly.
Render airbags, side airbags and emergency tensioning retractors unusable before disposal. Follow important detonation and disposal instructions. Service and Repair
10. Reinstall in opposite order. Observe installation notes.
