Ignition Lock: Service and Repair



Steering Lock:






Removal:
1. Remove cover below instrument panel.
2. Remove instrument cluster.
3. Remove coil for transponder from lock cylinder. (Vehicles with DAS 2a - as of 6/96).
4. Remove lock cylinder. Service and Repair
5. Disconnect connector (S8/1x1) from warning buzzer contact (exterior lamps) (S8/1).
6. Disconnect connector (S2/1x1) from ignition/starter switch (S2/1).
7. On vehicles with automatic transmission, unscrew or remove wire cable (37a) for parking lock interlock.
8. On vehicles with diesel engine, disconnect vacuum lines (brown, brown/blue) from vacuum switch (37b). Observe installed position of lines before disconnecting.
9. Loosen clamp (37c), press in locking pin (37d) and withdraw steering lock (37) from the bearing tube of jacket tube.

CAUTION: The steering lock (37) must not be turned from position "1" without the ignition/starter switch otherwise the steering lock will be jammed permanently.

10. Detach ignition/starter switch (S2/1).
11. Remove washer (37i) and parking lock valve (37h).
12. Detach warning buzzer contact (exterior lamps) (58/1) and, if necessary, vacuum switch (37b) with cam (37g).

Installation:
Install in reverse order, noting the following:
- The steering lock and the lock cylinder can only be assembled in lock cylinder position "1".
- Never turn the steering lock without the ignition/starter switch.
- When inserting, the steering lock into the jacket tube, ensure that the locking pin (37d) locks in position in the bore of the bearing tube on the jacket tube.
