CAUTION: This operation will distroy the two row angular ball bearing

NOTE: The wheel carrier is not removed:

REMOVAL
1. Remove the rear axle shaft, refer to Axle Shaft Assembly, Constant Velocity Type
2. Remove parking brake shoes, refer to Brakes and Traction Control
3. Remove the axle shaft flange as follows:






a. Position support plate ((010d) on end face of wheel carrier
b. Assemble removal/installation tool No. 140 589 03 61 00, or equivalent as shown in the illustration
c. Pull axle shaft flange (10) out of two row angular ball bearing

4. Remove the two row angular ball bearing inner race from axle flange as follows:
a. Screw correct collet chuck onto puller tool No. 001 589 50 33 00, or equivalent,





b. Secure axle shaft flange in a vise with suitable soft jaws





c. Place thrust piece (010e) with large diameter on the rear on the rear axle shaft flange

d. Install assembled pulling device tool No. 001 589 50 33 00, or equivalent over inner bearing race
- Clamp the collet chuck at the upper grooves via the conical sleeve of the puller
e. Pull inner bearing race off rear axle shaft flange using pulling device and remove

5. Remove the two row angular ball bearing from wheel carrier as follows:
a. Remove snap ring retaining bearing to wheel carrier





b. Install puller/installer tool No. 124 589 05 43 00 or 140 589 08 43 00, or equivalents with attachments (08a, 08b, 08c and 08e) through bearing as shown in the illustration
c. Pull bearing (8) from wheel carrier

INSTALLATION





1. Assemble puller/installer tool with new bearing into wheel carrier as shown in the illustration
2. Pull two row angular ball bearing fully into wheel carrier
3. Insert locking snap ring into groove to retain bearing





4. Assemble puller/installer tool with axle shaft flange as shown in the illustration
5. Pull axle shaft flange into bearing
6. Install rear axle shaft, tighten twelve point collared nut to: 320 Nm
- Secure with Loctite 574, or equivalent, sealing compound
7. Install brake components
8. Install wheel
