B. Water Entry at Roof Header (Front Area of Soft Top)
In the case of leakage at the roof front area water will exit along the side seal on the inside of the roof frame covering (arrow, Figure 1).
Possible causes:
^ Not enough sealing cord between roof and weatherstrip (arrows, Figure 2).
^ Not enough sealing cord at end of side rail toward weatherstrip (arrow, Figure 3).
Repair procedure
A Previous version
B Modified version
NOTE!
As of February 1993 production, the corner section of the weatherstrip, part number 124 770 19 98, is provided with a pocket for the side rail, and a lubricant coating is applied to the end caps (Figure 4).
The weatherstrip is identified by the number "14" (white paint) on the inside near the the left or right side rail (Figure 5). Always replace weatherstrips identified with code numbers up to "13".
A Previous version with recess
B Modified version without recess
Replace the previous version rails with recess, part number 124 770 O1 34/02 34, located at the front side of the soft top, with the modified version (Figure 6).
Code number on weatherstrip (arrow, Figure 5).
Rail, side front (Figure 6)
1. Open soft top. Pull off weatherstrip on sides, and remove front rail (Figure 7).
2. Pull off weatherstrip from rail.
3. Remove rail on side of soft top (Figure 8).
NOTE!
Install new plugs, part number 123 690 00 18.
4. Install weatherstrip (A), part number 124 770 19 98, identified by code number "14", onto rail
5. Glue backing (B), part number 124 774 O1 90, onto rail (see Figure 9 for installation position).
6 Glue backings (C, D), part number 124 778 O1 97, onto rail (see Figure 9 for installation position and dimensions).
NOTE!
Present backings (C, D) can be used again.
7. Round off sharp edges of rail end (Figure 10).
8. Remove front clip (1, Figure 11) from rail.
Check rear clip (2), and replace if necessary.
NOTE!
The clips must be installed parallel to the rail.
9. Install new sealing strip (B), part number 001 987 70 46, backing (C), part number 124 778 O1 97, and sealing cord (D), part number 140 989 00 98. Refer to Figure 11 for installation positions and measurements.
11. Press sealing cord, part number 140 989 00 98, onto roof to the left and right side next to the soft top cover frame (Figure 12).
NOTE!
The sealing cord must form a smooth transition to the frame.
12. Reinstall rail with premounted weatherstrip.
13. Position sealing cord, part number 140 989 00 98, on front side of side rail (Figure 13).
14. Install weatherstrip in rail at side (Figure 14).
NOTE!
Do not move sealing cord on rail. First insert weatherstrip at front and rear with end cap, then install in rail from front to rear. The end of the weatherstrip must be completely seated in the rail.
15. Position pocket between soft top cover and rail (Figure 15).
16. Close soft top.
17. Check transition and contact pressure of weatherstrips between A-pillar and corner of roof header using a 0.15 mm feeler gauge (Figure 16).
NOTE!
You should be able to just pull the feeler gauge through the gap, otherwise correct the positioning of the weatherstrip.
18. Check transition and contact pressure to second weatherstrip according to step 17 (Figure 17).
19. Perform water leak test.
Adjustment of rails
^ Front rail (Figures 18 and 19)
NOTE!
After loosening the screws, positioning of rails can be corrected slightly.
NOTE!
Do not move front rails in lengthwise direction. Doing so can have a negative effect on the closing of the soft top.
^ Center rail (Figures 20 and 21)
NOTE!
If it is necessary to adjust the height of the center rail, install or remove a washer at the front mounting point as required.
^ Rear rail (Figure 22)
