Removing, Installing, Disassembling and Assembling Rear Cover Removing and Installing Speedometer Drive Gear
Removal and Installation
Remove, Install. Exhaust system from plug connection, shield, rear engine mount and exhaust side support .
Drain Transmission oil, 14 Nm.
Remove, Install. Cable of kick-down solenoid valve, pulse generator or speedometer shaft .
Unscrew, Propeller shaft at universal joint flange (64), losen damping nut and push propeller shaft together 30-40 Nm.
Unscrew, Twelve-point collar nut (62), For this, engage parking lock.
Pull off, Universal joint flange (64), take off washer (65).
Installation Note:
Tightening torque 120 Nm, then drive home the collar into the recess in the drive shaft using a suitable drift.
Remove, install, Rear cover (70) by unscrewing and screwing on bolts (71), 13 Nm, check gasket (72).
When removing the rear cover, ensure that the kick-down solenoid valve is not damaged. It may be necessary to loosen the kick-down solenoid valve and turn it slightly.
Installation Note:
Check gasket for damage. It can generally be used several times but must not be coated with sealing agent.
Press out Radial seal (66) with screwdriver, press in new seal with suitable drift.
Disassembly and Assembly
Remove, Retaining ring (68), knock out, knock in and check grooved ball bearing (67), install retaining ring free of play (available in thicknesses 2.0 - 2.1 - 2.2 mm).
Remove Install, Drive gear (129), by taking off retaining element (131) and removing shaft (130) (number 1).
Replace, Radial seal (132), knock in with shop-made drift (number 2).
Remove Install, Plastic bush (69) (if electronic speedometer fitted). If leaks are present, renew and use shop-made drift for knocking in (number 3).

Shop-made Tool
The drift for knocking in should be shop-made in accordance with the stated dimensions.
Removal and Installation of speedometer drive gear (except model 202).
1. Remove drive gear (129) for mechanical speedometer. Take off retaining element (131), take out shaft (130) and drive gear (129).
2. Withdraw radial seal (132) from the rear transmission cover (70) and replace.
Note:
To assist removal, a hexagon bolt (M12) is screwed into the radial seal and clamped in the vise. Pull out radial seal by striking the transmission cover with light-blows using a plastic-headed hammer.
Installation Note:
Carefully press in radial seal (132) as far as the stop using shop-made drift.
3. If a new plastic bush (69) with O-ring (arrow) has to be installed in vehicles with electronic speedometer insert this with shop-made drift.
