Preparing Battery for Vehicle Storage




Removing, installing

DANGER:
Explosion hazard from explosive gas.
Danger of poisoning and acid burns when battery acid is swallowed.
Danger of acid burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries.

- Fire, sparks, naked flame and smoking prohibited.
- Wear safety gloves, safety clothing and safety glasses which protect against acid.
- Only pour battery acid into suitable, appropriately marked containers.



CAUTION: Notes on battery
- All models



Battery design modified (battery with felt)


NOTE: As of 01/97, a battery with felt is used for a limited period in models 202.028/121/128.


1.1 Remove rear seat
- Model 210 sedan

1.2 Fold rear seat cushion forward and remove battery compartment cover
- Model 210 T-model

1.3 Fold trunk cover up
- Model 202 sedan, 208

1.4 Remove cargo space cover
- Model 202 T-model

1.5 Open battery cover in front passenger-side footwell
- Model 168

1.6 Open engine hood and position upright
- Model 163

1.7 Remove battery cover in right side of trunk
- Model 129

2 Measure acid density


NOTE: Except model 202.028/121/128 with felt battery


Refer to Commercially Available Tools below

- Acid density too low:
- Charge battery
- Refer to Test And Adjustment Values For Battery, Power Supply below

3 Disconnect ground cable at the battery, connect


NOTE: Discharge of battery by quiescent current consumers (clock etc.) is prevented Model 163, 168, 170, 202, 208, 210, 129


4 Charge battery


NOTE: Every 3 months


- On no account leave battery discharged otherwise a sulfate coating will form on the plates. Sulfated plates are a sign of initial damage to the battery and cause premature failure

5 Install in reverse order
