Engine With CFI and LH-SFI

Preceeding Work:
- Remove follower at camshaft.

Engine 104.98:

Engine 104.99:

Removal and Installation Procedure:

- Engine 104.990: Drain cooling system at radiator.
- Remove guide rail at top.

NOTE:
If the top curved slide rail (a) is removed from its bearing, the pressure pin in the chain tensioner moves in the tensioning direction by one detent.
The chain tensioner must be removed to ensure the timing chain is not overtensioned.

- Engine 104.98: Unbolt heating return pipe (25) from the fan bearing bracket (28). Unbolt guide pulley.

- Engine 104.99: Unbolt cable terminal 4 between high voltage distributor and ignition coil from timing case cover (b).

- All engines: Unplug connections at position sensor, camshaft and solenoid.
- Unbolt screw plug.

Installation Note: Push back spacer pin to enable fronmt cover to be more easily installed. Install front cover and screw on plug (arrow).

- Unbolt shock absorber (c) tensioning device from front cover, push down and turn.
- Unscrew bolts (arrows) for front cover, take off cover with bolt item (e).
Engine 104.99: bolts (d) only in case of coolant return through front cover. Replace O-rings if removed (30b + 30c).

Installation Note: Pay attention to packing at shock absorber of tensioning device.

- For sealing, apply sealant 002 989 45 20 in each case in the form of a dot into the oil free groove of the timing case cover on the left and right at the joint (arrows) to the cylinder head.
- Insert new gasket dry (without sealant) into the oil-free groove.
Coat the top of the seal with a small amount of engine oil.
- Coat the contact surfaces of the front cover to the cylinder head with sealant 002 989 47 20.

- Fit insertion sleeve (a) Part no. 103 589 01 14 OO (for camshaft inner dia. 20 mm) onto exhaust camshaft. Coat around sealing lip of radial seal with engine oil.

NOTE: If the positioning magnet was removed on engines with coolant return through the front cover, seal the threads of the fastening bolts (f) with sealant.

- Install front cover with right bottom bolt inserted (e).
- Tighten the bottom bolts first.
- Install in the reverse order.

NOTE: If parts are replaced, adjust camshaft position sensor. Clearance 0.2 mm to 0.6 mm.

Tightening Torques:
Cylinder Head Cover to Cylinder Head 10 Nm
Distributor Rotor to Follower 2.5 Nm
Front Cover at Top of Cylinder Head 21 Nm
Follower to Camshaft 16 Nm
Shock Absorber of Tensioning Device 21 Nm
Connection Fitting for Coolant
Return (Engine 104.990) 21 Nm
