Body - Weatherstrip Replacement

BEGINNING OF PRODUCTION, MODEL 129

Note:
The Work Instructions 253a for this Service Information is revised to reflect changes in the repair procedure, resulting from production changes as of January 1991.

In the case of customer complaints about water leaking into the passenger compartment, locate the leak and make the proper repair according to the enclosed Work Instructions 253a, 254 and/or 255.

1. Remove panels at A-pillars (job no. 88-850).

2. Remove cover above windshield (job no. 68-410).




3. Remove trim at top of windshield (Figure 1).





4. Remove weatherstrips at A-pillars (Figure 2).

If "A" pillars are equipped with trim cover, remove first.




5. Remove rail above windshield (Figure 3).

Note:
Watch for possible spacers between rail and windshield. They must be reinstalled.




6. Remove rails at A-pillars (Figure 4).

Note:
Watch for possible spacers between rail and A-pillar. They must be reinstalled.

7. Remove top of "A" pillar filler/seals and discard. Clean contact surfaces and seal channels.




8. Install seal (self-adhesive backing), part number 129 671 00 20, to rail above windshield, making certain that the corner end is positioned according to arrow (Figure 5).




9. Apply MB-Glass sealant. part number 001 989 31 20. to area between arrows at left and right ends of windshield header (Figure 6).

10. Apply alcohol based lubricant to rail and trim and reinstall.

Observe note in step 5.

11. Place left and right side "A" pillar filler/seals, part numbers 129 725 O1 97 and 129 725 02 97 (Figure 7).




12. Seal fillers to A-pillars using MB-Universal sealant, part number 003 989 O1 71 (Figures 7 & 8).

13. Press fillers into sealant (Figure 8).




14. Seal fillers below rail by applying MB-Universal sealant, part number 003 989 O1 71, to area between arrows (Figure 9).

CAUTION:
Keep the water drain channels on top of the windshield rail free (Figure 9, arrows).

15. Seal fillers below rail by applying MB-Universal sealant, part number 003 989 O1 71, to area between arrows (Figure 10).




16. Apply MB-Glass sealant, part number 001 989 31 20, to sides of rails (Figure 11).

17. Apply MB-Universal sealant, part number 003 989 01 71, to corners of fillers (Figure 12).

18. Install rails at A-pillars. (Observe note in step 6).

19. Adjust fillers to assure proper positioning and seal.

20. Apply alcohol based lubricant to left and right weather-strips, part numbers 129 720 13 78 and 129 720 14 78, and install them into the rails.




21. Reinstall weatherstrips by sliding them into rail from above (Figure 13).

22. Apply MB-Universal sealant, part number 003 989 01 71, over full length of weatherstrip, sealing it to the A-pillar.




23. Fold top ends of weatherstrips outward and seal fillers with MB-Sealing rope, part number 001 987 56 46 (Figure 14).

24. Reinstall windshield header cover (job number 68-410).

25. Reinstall panels at A-pillars (job number 88-850).

26. Install hardtop. Close windows.

27. Test for water leaks.
