A. ORDERING INFORMATION
Dealers are able to purchase specific HHT hardware components. Complete HHT sets (including all HHT hardware) are no longer available. To assemble a complete HHT set, order individual components as needed.
An order for an HHT unit requires MBNA Home Office approval. This ensures that the tester's serial number is properly registered and that the ordering dealer will automatically receive an initial set of HHT Modules/Manuals as well as all future issues. As such, all orders for HHT units are accompanied with all currently valid HHT Modules.
Please note that the HHT Module, Test Manual and Operating Manual are NOT included in the Special Tools program. These items remain designated as literature items.
Special Tool Ordering Information
Literature Ordering Information
With integration into the Special Tools Program, all previously published literature order numbers for HHT hardware are invalid. This includes order numbers listed of the HHT Operating Manual. When ordering HHT hardware, please reference Special Tool Ordering Information.
B. HHT PRINTER CABLE
A print function has been integrated into the HHT module which allows information displayed on the HHT's screen to be printed for reference. The special printer cable required for printing may now be ordered using the part number listed above.
The print function has been designed to allow the use of a commercially available printer. Information on printer requirements may be referenced in any of the Test Manuals supplied with current HHT Modules.
C. HHT MODULE PROGRAM UPDATE SERVICE
The Hand-Held Tester (HHT) is designed with an exchangeable module which contains vehicle specific diagnostic programs. Periodic updates to HHT modules and the introduction of new HHT modules ensure that the technician is provided with the very latest diagnostic information concurrent to production changes and the introduction of new models. Therefore, it is very important to use the latest HHT module available when performing diagnoses.
The "HHT Module Program Update Service" was developed to provide the dealer with specific instructions on how to return outdated modules. We must stress that it is essential to follow the guidelines detailed herein as returned modules are reprogrammed for use in future updates. Delays in the return of outdated modules have a direct effect on the timely availability of updates.
1. Upon receipt of an updated module, remove the outdated module by unlocking the module compartment lid and pressing the release button on the back of the tester. Remove the previous version module and insert the updated edition.
2. Submit a manual AFA on MBNA form no. 512 for the outdated module being returned.
Do not submit this AFA form via MB-NET. The AFA form must accompany the return shipment.
The following information must be included when preparing the AFA:
- Part Number: S-6511-_ _ _ _-CORE
- Description: HHT Module Core
- Quantity: (e.g. 1)
Dealers returning more than one (1) HHT module should return all modules using one AFA form.
Do not include any other type of parts on this AFA!
3. Ship the outdated HHT module along with the completed AFA and Information Sheet (supplied with updated module) to MBNA via UPS insured.
Shipping address: Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc.

Upon issue of an updated module, the dealer's parts account will be charged $ 685.00 to reflect the update service charge ($ 275.00) and the HHT module core charge ($ 410.00). Upon return of the obsolete module to the Customer Assistance Center (CAC), the dealer's parts account will be credited for the core charge ($ 410.00) only if an AFA is received with the module within the time frame specified.
! IMPORTANT NOTE!
Unless otherwise specified, an obsolete module must be returned by the Return Date listed on the Information Sheet supplied with each updated module. FAILURE TO RETURN THE OUTDATED MODULE(S) BY THE SPECIFIED DATE WILL RESULT IN NO CREDIT BEING APPLIED FOR THE CORE CHARGE.
Credit will not be applied for lost or stolen modules, and those that have been damaged by improper use.
Credit for the core charge will appear on the dealer's current month parts statement, whenever possible.
Defective Modules
If a module appears to be defective, contact your SOM or Regional Technical Coordinator. If a defect has been confirmed, return the module with a properly completed AFA and HHT Defect Report to the address in this bulletin. The SOM or Technical Coordinator will contact the Customer Assistance Center (CAC) to enter a replacement module order at that time.
D. WARRANTY/REPAIR INFORMATION FOR HHT HARDWARE (Tool Warranty)
Attached to this Service Information is one sample copy of the HHT Failure/Defect Report. This form must be completed when any HHT hardware component is returned for warranty or repair consideration.
Note:
This form is not orderable, please make additional copies as necessary.
ALL QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS concerning the HHT should be directed to your REGIONAL TECHNICAL COORDINATOR! This includes queries on actual values, modules, literature, loaners, etc.
The warranty period on all HHT items is for one (1) full year from date-of-purchase. Non-warranty repairs (accidental damage, misuse, etc.) will be repaired and charged accordingly.
Prior to returning any component of the HHT set, the complaint must be verified with your Regional Technical Coordinator.
Depending upon availability, a MBNA loaner unit can be provided to your dealership at the request of your Regional Technical Coordinator only.
Note:
Any returned components must reference the serial number of the HHT. For example, if a defective adapter cable is returned, it must include the serial number of the HHT it was sold with.
The defective/malfunctioning HHT hardware component (except the module), including a completed HHT Failure/Defect Report, should be returned to:
Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc.
Test and Service Center

The HHT can not be returned with other warranty return items, it must be securely packaged and returned separately, prepaid and insured.
E. GENERAL INFORMATION/PRECAUTIONS
The HHT can be used for diagnosis of many vehicle Systems in current production models. In models equipped with a 38-pole data link connector (X11/4), the HHT is connected to the vehicle via a multiplexer cable. With the multiplexer cable connected to X11/4, the engine hood can not be closed. Closing the hood will damage the hood, multiplexer cable, data link connector, module box, etc.. If a road test is required while using the HHT, use the "driving" cable designed for this purpose.
On model 124 vehicles with the 16-pole data link connector (X11/4), the 4-pole "124" adapter cable must be used in place of the multiplexer cable. Model 129 vehicles with the 16-pole data link connector cannot be diagnosed with the HHT.
Vehicle systems diagnosable with the HHT can be tested individually, or all systems at once by means of a "Quick Test" (vehicles with 38-pole X11/4 only).
HHT Internal Battery Information
The internal battery of the HHT (located in the handle) is used to maintain the internal clock and calendar. The internal battery does not provide power to the HHT. Operating power is supplied directly from the vehicle while the HHT is connected.
Refer to HHT Operating Instructions for correct battery type to be used. Never use normal alkaline batteries.
Note:
^ The HHT will continue to function even if the battery is not installed.
^ If the internal battery is installed, but is not at full operating voltage, an error message for the battery test mode may appear. Low internal battery voltage can occur if the HHT is not used for several weeks. To recharge the internal battery, connect the HHT to a vehicle with the multiplexer cable and the ignition OFF. Leave the HHT connected for at least half an hour.
To open the battery compartment and install the battery, follow the numbered sequence below.
PRECAUTIONS
! IMPORTANT - FIRST TIME USERS!
DO NOT use the HHT without proper instruction by your Technical Training Centers or Regional Personnel.
! WARNING!
When performing a road test which requires the use of the HHT, ALWAYS use the "driving" cable and make sure the engine hood is completely closed. Diagnosis using the HHT during a road test should not be performed by the driver but by an accompanying technician.
! CAUTION!
Observe the following conditions to prevent extensive damage to the HHT:
^ DO NOT connect the HHT with the vehicle ignition ON!
^ ALWAYS connect the multiplexer cable to the HHT first and then to the data link connector!
^ NEVER connect the HHT to household/shop current (110/220 V).
^ The permissible operating temperature range of the HHT is -4°F to 104°F. The permissible storage temperature range is -220°F to 176°F.
^ Always keep the HHT away from strong electromagnetic fields (such as that generated by electrical welding equipment).
^ DO NOT expose the HHT to water or other agents such as brake fluid, thinners, acid etc.
^ Ensure that the contacts of the HHT module are kept clean and damage-free.
