C. Water Entry at Weatherstrip Joints at Side of Soft Top

In the case of leakage at the front side weatherstrip, water will exit from the weatherstrip pocket in the area of the inside roof covering.

In the case of leakage at the center and rear weatherstrip, water runs down on the inside of the side window in the area of the joints (arrows, Figures 1 and 2).

Possible causes:

^ Weatherstrip leakage at rail.

^ Incorrect fit and contact pressure at joints (arrows, Figures 3 and 4).

^ Insufficient sealing cord at end covers of second rail (Figure 5).

Repair procedure

NOTE!
As of February 1993 production, the following weatherstrips are installed:

Weatherstrips for center rail, part numbers 124 770 15/98/16 98, code number 14,
Weatherstrips for center rail, part numbers 124 770 23 98/24 98, code number 7,
Weatherstrips for rear rail, part numbers 124 770 13 98/14 98, code number 8.

If the leak cannot be stopped when resealing using the previous weatherstrips, install the modified ones.

The code numbers (in white paint) are located on the inside of the weatherstrips.

1. Remove weatherstrip on side of soft top at center (Figure 6).

NOTE!
When replacing weatherstrips, use those with same part numbers. The part number is located on the inside of the weatherstrip (toward rail).

2. Inspect clips inside rail, and replace if necessary (Figure 7).

NOTE!
The clips must be installed parallel to the rail.

NOTE!
If rail is being removed, always renew sealing Strip (A), part number 001 987 70 46 (Figure 8).

3. Install sealing cord, part number 140 989 00 98, in corners of weatherstrip (Figure 9).

4. Install weatherstrip in rail (Figure 10).

NOTE!
First position the weatherstrip end covers in the rail. The previously installed sealing cord must seal the end cap to the rail.

5. Remove weatherstrip at side of soft top at rear (Figure 11).

6. Check clip in rail at top, and renew if necessary (Figure 12).

NOTE!
The clip must be installed parallel to the rail.

NOTE!
If rail is being removed, always install a new sealing strip (A) and backing (B, C, Figure 13).

A Sealing strip, part number 001 987 70 46, length 460 mm
B Backing, part number 124 778 O1 97, length 160 mm, width 18 mm
C Backing, part number 124 692 92/12 92, length 130 mm

7. Install weatherstrip and backing.

NOTE!
Install weatherstrip by positioning end cap first in rail at top.

8. Close soft top.

9. Check transition and contact pressure of weatherstrips, correct if required (refer to section B. Water Entry at Roof Header (Front Area of Soft Top), beginning with step 17).

10. Perform water leak test.
