Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair
Inspect oil level in automatic transmission, add oil if necessary
Adding transmission oil
Danger:
- Risk of accident. Accidents may result if the vehicle starts off unintentionally with the engine running. Risk of injury as working around the engine during start-up or while running may result in confusions and burns
- Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving.
- Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
- Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.
NOTE: The vehicle must be horizontal
1 Remove locking pin (93a)
NOTE: To do this, shear off the plate of the locking pin with a suitable tool and press down the rest of the pin in the cap.
2 Take off cap (93)
3 Fill with transmission oil
CAUTION: When refilling and after changing the oil, pour in approx. 5 L of transmission oil before starting the engine. Insufficient and excessive quantities of oil result in malfunctions and transmission damage.
4 Start engine and allow to idle in selector lever position" P"
NOTE: When refilling, refill with the rest of the specified oil quantity.
5 Shift through the driving stages several times with the vehicle stationary and the engine idling
NOTE: Operate service brakes at the same time
6 Check transmission oil temperature
NOTE:
- Operate service brakes at the same time. When the transmission is cold, the oil level indicator must be between the "min." and "max." marks, 25 degree C (transmission oil temperature). The exact oil level at 80 degree C (transmission oil temperature) must be between the "min." and "max." markings.
- When using the HHT or STAR DIAGNOSIS, the current transmission oil temperature must be read out in one of the selector lever positions R, D, 4, 3, 2 or 1.
7 Insert oil dipstick as far as the stop and pull out again, read off oil level and repeat if necessary
NOTE: Warm up the transmission, wait at least 2 minutes and check the oil level with the engine running.
CAUTION: If too much transmission oil is added, it is absolutely essential to drain off or extract the surplus. Insufficient and excessive quantities of oil result in malfunctions and transmission damage.
8 Check oil level again
- Correct if necessary
9 Fit cap (93) on oil filler pipe and press in new locking pin (93a) until it clicks into place
10 Check transmission for leaks
CAUTION: In the event of oil loss determine and eliminate cause, otherwise it may result in both malfunctions, transmission damage and serious harm to the environment.
