Electronic Level Control

Electronic Level Control

The adaptive damping system (ADS) is available on the 1991-92 300SL and 500SL models and 1992 300SD and SE, 400SE, 500SEL and 600SEL models. This system is used in conjunction with the automatic leveling system.
The ADS is an adaptive system that varies the suspension damping forces to suit road irregularities and driving style. Acceleration sensors on the body and the suspension determine vertical acceleration and road condition. A damping module is located between the strut and the suspension pressure reservoir for each wheel. Each damping module contains two solenoid valves that are switched by the electronic control unit and allow four different shock absorber damping force stages, firm, normal, soft or comfort. On 1992 300SD and SE, 400SE, 500SEL and 600SEL, then system does not control the front axle level.
To control horizontal acceleration, the ADS control unit uses the speed signal to calculate acceleration and deceleration in driving direction. The ADS control unit uses vehicle speed and steering single to calculate lateral acceleration.
