Front Passenger's Airbag
Pay attention to safety precautions for Airbag, Side Airbag and Emergency Tensioning Retractors. Service PrecautionsRemoval:
1. Remove ignition key.
Models up to 6/93:
2. Remove ground cable of battery and cover over negative pole and negative terminal.
3. Remove floormat in passenger footwell.
4. Unbolt footrest in passenger footwell.
5. Unplug red test connector for airbag with ETR connector [X11/13]
All Models:
6. Unscrew central securing bolt [2] of passenger airbag unit and lift the unit out.
7. Unplug connectors of the squibs of the passenger airbag unit.
NOTE: The passenger airbag init is equipped with only one scquib as of approx. July 1993.
WARNING: No further work may be performed on the airbag unit. The airbag unit must be stowed under personal supervision or, if it is removed for a lengthy period, under lock and key.
Stow removed airbag units so that the outlet opening of the airbag (padded side) is facing up.
Installation:
1. Plug in connector or connectors of passenger airbag unit (Connector must make an audible click when engaged).
2. Insert passenger airbag unit into installation opening.
3. Tighten central securing bolt (2) and check installation position of airbag unit. Adjust, if necessary. Be sure to check and adjust this particularly if you have removed the mounting frames.
Models Up to 6/93:
4. Plug together red test connector airbag with ETR connector [X11/13].
5. Install footrest in passenger footwell.
6. Insert foot mat in passenger footwell.
7. Connect ground cable of battery.
All Models:
8. Switch ignition ON.
NOTE: SRS Malfunction Indicator Lamp in instrument cluster must go out within 20 seconds.
9. After installation perform diagnostics.
Notes Regarding Checking and Adjusting Installation Position:
NOTE: If the mounting frame [9] was removed:
- insert mounting frame,
- tighten screws (5-8) slightly,
- insert passenger airbag unit and,
- tighten airbag unit with the central securing bolt (2).
Checking and Adjusting Installation Position:
NOTE: The airbag unit must always be tightened with the central securing bolt for the check.
1. Apply and release pressure alternately with your thumb and index finger on the left and right sides of the airbag unit. The airbag unit must not move.
- Eliminate play of the airbag unit by alternately tightening and slackening the screws [3 and 4].
2. Check the size of the gaps of the airbag unit. The clearance to the instrument panel must be the same all around and the transitions must be flat.
- If the airbag unit is too low in the upper or lower area, too low in the left or right area slacken screws [5 and 7] and [6 and 8], respectively, and move unit appropriately down or up or press inward accordingly.
