Convertible - Modified/Replacement of Front/Rear Section

As of June 1992, the soft top sections, headliner and attachment points to the soft top frame have been modified.

Note:
The SMS, Repair Instructions, Job Nos. 77-305 and 77-310 with regard to the replacement of the soft top have been updated.

Please refer to the instructions until the revised microfiche - Body Assembly Jobs II, Model 129 is issued.

The Operation Code and the Labor Time have not changed.

REPLACEMENT OF THE HEADLINER

Previous version (up to chassis end number 065745)

Revised version (as of chassis end number 065746)

Repair note:

Previous version headliners, part number 129 770 01 80, are to be used on vehicles up to chassis end number 065745.

The modified headliner, part number 129 770 03 80, can be used on all model 129 vehicles as of production start-up.

With the exception of step 3, the installation of the headliner in the model 129 up to chassis end number 065745, should be performed according to the repair procedure.


Repair procedure:

1. Remove the soft top panels from soft top frame.




2. Unclasp the headliner at frame and bows. On vehicles up to chassis end number 065745, the headliner must be unscrewed from the bow (g, Figure 1).




3. Remove headliner from bow (b) in increments of 10 mm and glue (use MB special adhesive part no. 000 989 92 71) this Strip without creases to the bow (b, Figure 2).




4. Fold over outside edge of the headliner, part number 129 770 03 80 (revised version), and stitch at the arrows (arrows, Figure 3).
5. Glue headliner on rail, pant number 129 774 25 47 (g, Figure 4).

Caution!



Up to chassis end number 065745, glue the headliner completely to the rail (Figure 4).

As of chassis end number 065746 glue the headliner only to the middle of the bow (arrows, Figure 4).

6. Attach rail with screws, part number 007983 00495, to rear bow using screw holes provided.
7. Continue to assemble in reverse order to the disassembly.




Parts Information


REPLACEMENT OF THE FRONT SOFT TOP SECTION:

The one piece modified soft top can be installed on model 129 since production start-up.

Modified version (as of chassis end number 065746)

Repair note:

Installation of soft top covers in vehicles up to chassis end number 067745.




1. Glue (use MB special adhesive part no. 000 989 92 71) cover to bow (b, Figure 7).

Caution!
When attaching top section, glue on bow at line (arrows, Figure 7).

1. Glue (use MB special adhesive part no' 000 989 92 71) the soft top cover to bow (b, Figure 8).

Caution!
The cut edge of the soft top cover must be glued to the edge of the bow (arrows, Figure 8).

2. Glue in spoiler (Figure 9, c).
3. Glue in headliner (f, Figure 9).
4. Continue to assemble in reverse order of disassembly.

REPLACEMENT OF THE REAR SOFT TOP SECTION:




As of chassis end number 062964, the elastic webbing and the highlighted sections of the soft top have been deleted (Figure 10).

The modified soft top cover can be installed on all model 129 vehicles since production start-up.

On vehicles with previous version, do not remove the elastic webbing.

Repair note for vehicles without the elastic webbing.




Secure the rear bow with self-made tool (Figure 12), to the B-pillar to aid in the installation of the soft top rear section (Figure 11).
