Checking Pump Pressure

1. Remove power steering/tandem pump cover.
2. Remove steering fluid from pump with special suction tool 112 589 00 72 00, or equivalent.
3. Remove high-pressure expansion hose.
4. Attach tester and special adapter tool 124 589 19 63 00, or equivalent, to power steering pump.
5. Fill reservoir with steering fluid, then allow engine to run at idle.
6. Read circuit pressure with valve open. Reading should not exceed 71 psi. Do not move steering wheel.
7. Check maximum opening pressure by closing valve on tester while maintaining engine speed at approximately 1000 RPM. Maximum pressure can also be measured by turning steering wheel to left or right lock. Do not continue testing for excessive periods of time. A possible rise in fluid temperature could cause damage to pump.
8. If pressures are not as specified, replace pump.
9. Refill power steering pump, then bleed system as described under System Bleed.
