Telescoping Rod (Backup Rod)
Telescoping Rod (Backup Rod):
The telescoping rod (20) is a spring-loaded control rod. It connects the connecting lever with the throttle valve lever on engines 103 and 104. On engines 116 and 117, it connects the control lever on the accelerator pedal position sensor with the connecting lever on the throttle valve side. On engine 119 it connects the lever at the accelerator pedal position sensor with the lever on the longitudinal (lengthwise) control shaft.
Telescoping Rod:
During electronic control of the throttle valve the telescoping rod is also used. It has the following functions.
^ If the drive torque is too great at the drive wheels, the telescoping rod allows the adjustment of the throttle valve against the position of the accelerator. This adjustment movement is assisted by the return springs at the throttle valve connecting lever and at the throttle valve. A solid control link instead of the telescoping rod is unusable since with such a rod an ASR control operation would not be possible.
^ During cruise control operation, the actuator controls the control pressure cable to the automatic transmission. This way downshifts are possible when the engine is under higher load.
^ During a failure or malfunction in the electronic components the telescoping rod takes over the adjustment of the throttle valve. This way continued driving is insured, during which approx 2/3 of the available engine power can be used. The "limp-home" system is in operation. The driver can notice this by a short freeplay and the increased pedal force required and by illumination of the ASR warning lamp.
