Doors - Preloading After Replacement and Special Tool

PRELOADING DOORS AFTER REPLACEMENT

When replacing a door, e.g. as part of an accident repair, an additional procedure: "Preloading door" must be performed. The need for later readjustment caused by the door settling is thereby largely prevented.




This procedure is to be performed using the Special Tool, part no. 140 589 22 23 00, shown below (Figure 1).

Repair note:

The preloading tool can be adjusted for use on left or right doors by loosening the knurled knob (3, Figure 1) and repositioning the support (1, Figure 1).


Adjustment Procedure

1. Adjust door as per SMS Repair Instructions, Job Nos. 72-050/060.




2. Attach alignment tape Strip and separate at the door and body panel gap (Figure 2).

3. Loosen door striker.
4. Using the upper door hinge mounting screws on the door, carefully raise door 1.5 mm and retighten screws (dimension B, Figure 2).
5. Tighten door striker screws for subsequent preloading operation.




6. Insert support (1, Figure 3) of the preloading tool into the opening for the door striker from below and close the safety latch (2, Figure 3).




7. Push the door striker into the door lock to the second detent (4, Figure 4).

CAUTION!
The preloading tool and the torque wrench must be horizontally aligned and torque must be applied In a vertical motion only.

8. Apply torque in the direction of the arrow only (Figure 4). using the specified torque noted in the Preload Chart below.
9. Remove preloading tool.
10. Loosen and adjust the door striker, see SMS. Repair Instructions, Job Nos. 72.050.060.
11. Tighten door hinge screws on door.

Tightening torque: 37 Nm

12. Tighten door striker screws.

Tightening torque: 25 Nm

13. Check door alignment/adjustment.
