Fig. 5 Transmission Removal. 300 E & TE w/4MATIC:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable. To avoid damaging the insulating mat of the passenger compartment wall when lowering the transmission, cover insulating mat with sheet metal.
2. Release pressure from hydraulic system by switching lever on service valve.
3. Remove bracket for oil filler pipe at cylinder head.
4. Press off ball socket and unhook control pressure cable, then remove engine throttle control shaft.
5. Raise and support vehicle.
6. Remove exhaust system complete with side support.
7. Drain transmission fluid from distributor transmission, transmission and torque converter.
8. Disconnect pneumatic oil line for axle distributor and central lock connector, Fig. 5.
9. Remove two bolts in transmission, then using vehicle lift attachment tool No. 124 589 00 62 00 or equivalent, raise transmission and distributor transmission slightly.
10. Remove cross piece from under front of propeller shaft.
11. Remove propeller shaft to transmission flange attaching bolts.
12. Using a drift punch, remove any centering sleeves remaining on the transmission flange.
13. Loosen propeller shaft clamping nut, then push propeller shaft back as far as possible.
14. Remove rear engine mount to frame attaching bolts, then the mount.
15. Loosen clamping nut for front axle propeller shaft.
16. Remove front axle propeller shaft to distributor transmission attaching bolts.
17. Using a suitable drift, loosen the close fit sleeves in the propeller flange.
18. Separate propeller disc from propeller flange.
19. Use a 65mm open end wrench to hold the front propeller shaft to front axle housing connecting flange, then remove six attaching bolts.
20. Remove torque converter cover plate, then the six torque converter driver plate attaching bolts.
21. Push white plastic ring for starting lock switch in a upward direction, then using two screwdrivers, carefully pry off plug.
22. Remove kickdown solenoid valve cable attaching bolt, then release cable strap.
23. Disconnect mechanical speedometer driveshaft.
24. Disconnect shift rod, then pull vacuum line off vacuum box.
25. Disconnect oil cooler feed and return lines.
26. Remove oil filler pipe retaining bolt, then push filler pipe upwards.
27. Remove all transmission to intermediate flange attaching bolts.
28. Remove transmission by pulling towards the rear and lowering carefully.
29. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque attaching nuts and bolts to specifications.
b. Install new sealing rings for oil feed and return lines.
