Fuel Systems

Fuel Tank Location:





WARNING: Observe fire safety precautions.

1. Disconnect the NEG. battery cable and insulate (Bat. located at right side of trunk).
2. Remove the fuel filler cap and draw out all fuel.

NOTE: The fuel tank capacity is approx. 17 gals. (80 liters)

3. Detach the clips for fastening the top section of the partition wall.
4. Remove the partition between the fuel tank and the trunk compartment.

5. Remove the filler neck boot (61).
6. If present remove the control unit (54/1).

Fuel Tank View:





7. Remove the cup seal (60/1).
8. Disconnect fuel feed hose (69). Catch residual fuel.
9. Detach the exhaust system as necessary for clearance and remove the left drive shaft from the final drive.
10. Disconnect the vent valve (51) and the return hose (70). Catch residual fuel.
11. Remove the retaining bolts (50/1).

Fuel Tank Removal:





12. Pull the fuel tank back as far as possible toward the left rear. As soon as the fuel gauge sending unit electrical connector is accessible, disconnect it.
13. Lift out the fuel tank with the filler neck leading.
14. Reinstall the fuel tank in reverse manner.


NOTE: a. If space is insufficient when installing the fuel tank, it may be necessary to remove the fuel strainer (68) and installing it later from below. Since the fuel strainer secures the fuel steadying bowl within the tank care must be taken to not dislodge the steadying bowl.
b. Torque the fasteners (50/1) to approx. 15.5 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Make sure washers are in place.
c. Torque the fuel strainer (68) to approx. 28.5 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
d. Torque the fuel gauge sending unit to approx. 28.5 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).

15. Run the engine and check for fuel leaks.
