Ignition System (EZL)

ENTERING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS

Impulse Counter Connection:

1. Connect the impulse counter to the on-board diagnostic connector.

^ Black lead of the impulse counter to socket 1
^ Yellow lead of the impulse counter to socket 8
^ Red lead of the impulse counter to socket 16

NOTE: Since the EZL/AKR control unit does not have memory malfunction capabilities, only faults that are present while the test is being conducted will be indicated.

2. Turn the ignition to the run (on) position.

^ The LED "U Batt" should come on. If not check the voltage supply and the impulse counter fuse.
^ Check for voltage between socket 1 and 16 of the diagnostic connector. Should be between 6-12 volts.

3. Start the engine and run for at least 8 seconds at 3100 - 3600 RPM with the vacuum hose connected to the EZL/AKR ignition control unit.

^ Let the engine return to idle and remove the vacuum hose at the EZL/AKR control unit.

4. With the engine at idle, move the transmission selector lever from "P" or "N" to "D" and back again.

^ Run the engine for at least 2 seconds above 5000 RPM.

5. With the engine at idle, reconnect the vacuum hose.

^ Raise the engine speed to approx. 2300 RPM and then briefly apply full throttle (full throttle switch contact must close briefly).

^ Let the engine return to idle speed.

6. Depress the start button for 2 - 4 seconds.

^ Fault codes will be indicated by the number in the impulse counter display window. Take note of the impulse display number.
^ Faults are displayed in ascending order.
^ The number 1 indicates that no faults are present.

7. Repeat step 3 until all faults are indicated. When all fault codes have been displayed and the start button is pushed again for 2 - 4 seconds the first fault will be repeated.

^ Refer to FAULT CODE TABLES for fault path, and proceed to SYSTEM TESTING BY FAULT CODES for specific diagnosis.

EZL/AKR Malfunction Table:

8. Repair the indicated faults.
9. After repairs have been completed clear the memory and repeat the test sequence. If all of the faults have been corrected the impulse counter will display #1 (code 1, no faults present). If all of the fault codes have not been corrected the impulse counter window will the display the indicated fault.

CLEARING CODES

NOTE: All faults will be cleared if the ignition is switched off. However, with the engine running each fault code must be cleared individually.

1. After the fault code has been displayed, wait 2 seconds and then press the start button on the impulse counter for at least 6 seconds.

^ The impulse counter will display #1 indicating that the fault code has been cleared or the next fault will be displayed. Continue until all of the codes are cleared.
