Replacing Hardtop Weatherstrip: Overview

SUBJECT: REPLACING WEATHERSTRIP AT FRONT OF HARDTOP MODEL 129

Figure 1:





1. Remove hardtop and place it on soft support to prevent damage to paint finish.

2. Loosen bonding at bottom corners of side windows (Figure 1).

3. Remove weatherstrips up to rail at front of hardtop.

4. Mark positioning of rail at front of hardtop. Remove rail with weatherstrip.

5. Remove rails on sides of hardtop (job number 68-570, paragraph 3).

6. Clean adhesive and sealers from contact surfaces on hardtop, as well as at front and side rails


7. Apply MB-Glass sealant, part number 001 989 31 20, to side of rail (Figure 2) and install rails (see step 5).





8. Seal rails to hardtop using MB-Glass sealant, part number 001 989 31 20 (top arrows, Figure 3).

Note: For rails without hooks (to prevent weatherstrip from sliding), seal must be installed using clamps, part number 129 779 03 70 (bottom arrow, Figure 3).

9. Install seal (self-adhesive backing), part number 001 987 70 46, to front of hardtop (Figure 4).

10. Slide weatherstrip, part number 129 790 12 98, onto front rail and apply MB-Glass sealant, part number 001 989 31 20 (bottom arrows, Figure 5).

Note: Seal weatherstrip to inside of rail using MBGlass sealant, part number 001 989 31 20 (top arrows, Figure 5).

11. Apply MB-Glass sealant, part number 001 989 31 20, to corners of hardtop (Figure 6).

12. Install the assembled rail and weatherstrip on hardtop (Figure 7).

13. Seal gap between rails of hardtop/side windows using MB-sealing rope, part number 001 987 56 46 (Figure 8).

14. Apply MB-Glass sealant, part number 001 989 31 20, to side of rails (Figure 9).

15. Install side weatherstrips into rails.

16. Glue corners of weatherstrips to bottom ends of side windows. (see step 2).

17. Install and lock hardtop.

18. Check for smooth transition of weatherstrip to A-pillar (arrow, Figure 10). Remove hardtop and correct positioning of weatherstrip if necessary.

19. Install hardtop. Close windows.

20. Test for water leaks.
