Removal and Installation of Rear Radial Sealing Ring in Transfer Case





Disconnect battery ground cable.

Cover insulating mat of components compartment panel with a suitable sheet metal part.

Depressurize hydraulic system by relocating the service valve in the test position or relocating the coding plug. Bleed system after repair (28-140). Bleeding Hydraulic System

Disconnect exhaust system (100). Remove exhaust side support (24).

Remove shields (3, 4).

Remove transverse bridge (31). Hexagon bolts (32, 33), 25 Nm.

Drain oil from transfer case (201). Capacity 0.7 liter.

Unbolt propeller shaft (7). Hexagon bolts (25) 60 Nm. Loosen fitting sleeves in joint flange. Replace self-locking hexagon nuts (26).

Slacken propeller shaft intermediate bearing (202).

Slacken prevailing torque type self-locking nut (200), 30 to 40 Nm. Use Torque wrench 001 589 66 21 00, Open-ended wrench 126 589 00 01 00.

Push front propeller shaft (7) together.

Unsscrew rear engine mounting (22), hexagon bolts (23b) and washers (23a) 40 Nm, hexagon bolts (23c) 20 Nm.

Unbolt collar nut (35), 160 Nm. Replace and lock. Use Stud driver 129 589 01 07 00. Socket wrench 126 589 02 09 00.

Pull off joint flange (11). Use Puller 129 589 01 33 00.
Note: Models 124.333 and 124.393 have a 4-arm jointed flange.

Press radial sealing ring (56) out and replace. Lightly lubricate sealing lip and contact surface. Use Mandrel 123 589 04 15 00.
