Drive Shaft Alignment Measurement Procedure

DRIVE SHAFT ALIGNMENT MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE

1. Remove/reinstall the engine compartment lower panel.

CHECKING ABSOLUTE ANGLE OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION

2. Attach fixture 1 (010a) part no. 140 589 30 83 00, with protractor (010b) part no.140 589 11 21 00, to the left hand side machined surface of transmission, using wing nut and knurled nut (010c, Figure 2).

IMPORTANT
Clean off machined surface prior to mounting fixture. Attach fixture (010a) with small side towards the transmission.

3. Read and note absolute angle (example: 1°55', Figure 3).

4. Remove fixture (010a) with protractor from transmission.

CHECKING ABSOLUTE ANGLE OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

5. Hold fixture 2 (010c), part no. 140 589 31 63 00, with protractor to machined surface (arrows, Figure 4) on automatic transmission.

IMPORTANT
Clean off machined surface (arrows, Figure 4) of automatic transmission prior to using fixture.

6. Read and note absolute angle (Figure 5).

Location of fixture and protractor on automatic transmission

All vehicles (except models 124.034/036. 129.06 07)

7. Attach protractor to the upper threaded bores of fixture 1, part no. 140 589 30 63 00 (arrows, Figure 6).

8. Hold fixture (010a) against the front drive shaft (Figure 6). Read absolute angle and note value (example: 2°10', Figure 6).

IMPORTANT
The contact surfaces of the fixture (010a) must rest flat against the drive shaft without contacting any of the drive shaft balance weights.

Models 124.034/036, 129.06/07

Attach protractor to the lower threaded bores (arrows. Figure 7) of fixture 1 part no. 140 589 30 63 00. Read absolute angle and note values.

ALL VEHICLES

9. Hold fixture 1, part no. 140 589 30 63 00, with protractor against the rear drive shaft. Read absolute angle and note values (example: 2°45' Figure 8).

REPAIR HINT:

On model 129.076. remove reinstall the rear exhaust system after the flange connection and rear support bracket.

10. Using the appropriate tools, clean off any residual sealers, paint, surface corrosion, roughness etc from machined surfaces (arrows, Figure 9) of the rear axle center piece housing.

11. Hold fixture 3 (010d), part no. 140 589 32 63 00, with protractor against rear axle center piece housing machined surfaces (Figures 9, 10).
Read absolute angle and note values (example: 2°40', Figure 10).

12. Carefully review Examples 1 and 2, enter the previously recorded absolute angle values into a blank row as shown in Example 2. Calculate the overall drive shaft angle. Prior to making any corrections review repair hints. then correct as necessary (See Example 1).

13. The calculated overall drive shaft angles (Example 1) indicate that the front and center angles are within the permissible tolerances. See Permissible tolerances of drive shaft angle deviation data.

In order to change the rear angle, a spacer of 2 mm thickness (see Parts Information) must be added to the already existing spacer between the rear axle center piece and front mount (arrow, Figure 11).
