Removal & Installation of Front Axle Flange With Angular-Contact Ball Bearing
Removing and installing front axle shaft flange with angular contact ball bearing
Special tools
Note Only evaluate wheel bearing play with front axle shaft installed. As a general rule renew self-locking nuts and bolts.
Removal
1. Remove front axle shafts, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain - Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints - Axle Shaft Assembly - Axle Shaft - Service and Repair - Procedures Service and Repair
2. Remove front wheel.
3. Unbolt brake hose support (15) on damper strut (11) and unclip cable (45) of the brake lining wear indicator.
4. Unbolt floating caliper (33) from steering knuckle and suspend on a hook.
Caution: Do not subject brake hose (39) and cable (45) to tensile loads.
5. Remove brake disc (34) from front axle shaft flange and unscrew locking bolt (34a).
6. Insert thrust piece (010a) into steering knuckle (5) from behind.
7. Assemble removal device (010) 201 589 00 61 00 with thrust piece on the front axle shaft flange (9). Pull front axle shaft flange out of angular contact bearing with removal device.
Note: In doing this the angular contact ball bearing is damaged. Always renew angular contact ball bearings.
8. Remove circlip (a) from steering knuckle (5) with pliers 126 589 00 37 00.
9. Draw angular contact ball bearing (8) out of steering knuckle with removal tool (08a - 08c) 201 589 0443 00 and remove.
Note: The angular contact ball bearing is bonded on vehicles produced up to 06/88, therefore before removing the angular contact ball bearing, the steering knuckle has to be heated up in the area of the angular contact ball bearing with a suitable hot air gun.
10. Clamp front axle shaft flange (9) and protective jaws in a vise. Put on thrust piece (010b) 000 589 03 34 00.
11. Pull off bearing inner ring from front axle shaft flange with extractor 001 589 36 33 00 and collet 201 589 00 34 00. Place collet in the groove.
Note: If bearing inner ring cannot be completely withdrawn, remove extractor again and place thrust piece underneath.
12. Check if parts can be used again. Check for height and lateral out of true condition at front axle shaft flange (9).
Height out of true
Installed 0.12 mm
Removed 0.02 mm
Lateral out of true
Installed 0.12mm
Fitting for brake disc 67.00-66.97 mm
Angular contact ball bearing 45.020-45.011 mm
Installing
13. On vehicles produced after 06/88. Insert angular contact ball bearing (8) in front axle shaft flange and draw into steering knuckle (5) with installation device (08a, 08b and 08d) 201 589 04 43 00 until this contacts inside (arrow).
14. On vehicles produced prior to 06/88. Carefully clean mounting bore in steering knuckle (5) and angular contact ball bearing outer ring with TRI cleaning agent or thinners. Coat mounting bore beneath circlip groove with Loctite (648). Insert angular contact ball bearing (8) in front axle shaft flange and draw into steering knuckle (5) with installation device (08a, 08b and 08d) 201 589 04 43 00 until this contacts inside (arrow).
Note: Curing time of the bonding agent is approx. 10 - 12 hours.
15. Insert circlip (8a) in groove in the steering knuckle (5) with pliers 126 589 00 37 00. Pay attention to correct seating.
16. Insert front axle shaft flange (9) into the 2-row angular contact ball bearing (8) with installation device (8a, 8b, 8c) 201 589 04 43 00. When inserting ensure that the thrust piece (8c) makes good contact at the bearing inner ring (arrow).
17. Install brake disc (34) onto front axle shaft flange. Renew locking bolt (34a) and tighten to 10 Nm.
18. Assemble floating caliper (33) to steering knuckle (5). Renew self-locking bolts (33a) and tighten to 115 Nm.
Caution: Do not twist brake hose and subject it to tensile loads.
19. Assemble brake hose support (15). Clip cable (45) to the brake hose support.
20. Refit front wheel.
21. Install front axle shaft, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain - Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints - Axle Shaft Assembly - Axle Shaft - Service and Repair - Procedures Service and Repair
