Differential - Modified Rubber Mount Installation

A. Modified Rear Rubber Mounts





As of November 1988 production, improved rubber mounts with a smaller gap (C, arrow) are installed in the rear axle carrier (Figure 1).

In case of repairs, this new version of the rubber mount can be installed in earlier production vehicles. The previous part is no longer available.





Effective Serial Number

Procedure:

1. Disconnect exhaust from rubber hangers.

2. Remove heat shield above exhaust system.

3. Loosen drive shaft intermediate bearing.

4. Loosen and lower rear axle center piece.





5. Use remover/installer to press rubber mounts (1g) towards the front out of the rear axle carrier (1) (Figure 2).

6. Press new right mount from the front into the rear axle carrier. Make sure that the gap (arrow, Figure 1) is at the bottom.





7. Use items (01b - 01e) of remover/installer to press in rubber mount until thrust washer (01e) contacts rear axle carrier (Figure 3).





8. Insert new left rubber mount into the rear axle carrier with gap at the bottom. Continue to press in until bolt of test arm (01a) is in enter of front oval bore (arrows) (Figure 4).

9. Install rear axle center piece.

10. Install drive shaft intermediate bearing.

11. Install heat shield above exhaust system.

12. Suspend exhaust system on rubber hangers.

In Case of Warranty:

B. Modified front mount Spacer





As of February 1988 production, a Spacer (50a) without notch, thickness 2.6 mm, is installed on the front mount for height adjustment. Since then, the code number (arrow) is no longer stamped into the rear axle carrier (Figure 5).

Note:
In case of repairs, the proper spacer with notch(es) should be used if a code number is present on the rear axle carrier (see S.I. 35/46, Sept. 1985). For rear axle carriers without embossed code number, use a spacer without notch.
