SUBJECT: CHECKING TORQUE CONVERTER ON OVER-REVVED ENGINES M102 AND M103
In addition to engine damage, over-revved engine way cause a permanent expansion (or bulging) of the automatic trarmmission torque converter. The expanded torque converter will in turn rub against the primary pump and damage the radial seal.
On all engine damaged by over-revving, the height of the torque converter must be checked.
Figure 1:
Place torque converter with primary pump flange face down and measure distance "A" (Figure 1). If measurement "A" is less than 121.5 mm, the torque corrverter is still good and can be used. If measurement "A" is larger than 121.5 mm, replace torque converter.
Note: If the torque converter be replaced, also replace the radial seal on the primary pump.
