Verifying Function of Cold Start Delayed Upshift

TEST CONDITIONS:
1. The following test procedure is performed on a vehicle with a cold engine, ie: coolant < 40° C.

- If performing this test procedure on a vehicle with a warm engine, simulate cold engine conditions by using special tool no. 140 589 04 63 00 connected to four pole engine coolant temperature sensor.

2. Prior to testing, verify control pressure cable is correctly adjusted and cable/linkages move freely.

ELECTRICAL TEST CONNECTION:
1. Connect milliamp test cable, tool no. 102 589 04 63 00 (same test cable as used for EHA measurements on a CIS-E engine), to Upshift delay switchover valve Y3/3.
2. Connect switchover valve Y3/3 connector to above mentioned test cable.
3. Connect approved digital multimeter to test cable with cable leads long enough to route into vehicle interior via front door or window opening.
4. Set multimeter to milliamp measurement setting.

PNEUMATIC TEST CONNECTION:
1. Connect vacuum Y-connector to switchover valve Y3/3 outlet to control pressure cable pneumatic element.
2. Connect vacuum line from control pressure cable pneumatic element to Y-connector.
3. Connect suitable vacuum line to Y connector of sufficient length to route into vehicle interior via front door or window opening.
4. Connect vacuum gauge to vacuum line routed to vehicle interior.

TEST PROCEDURE:
1. Start engine and immediately drive without any warm-up period.

- Upshift delay may only remain active for approx. 80 seconds per drive cycle. (cold).
- Drive vehicle with shift selector in position D using normal light throttle loads.
- Avoid heavy traffic. stop and go driving conditions. up or downhill grades.

3. With an assistant observing multimeter gauge simultaneously, verify switchover valve Y3/3 electrical current is switched 0N during delay upshift function and that control pressure cable pneumatic element receives vacuum signal.

- Control pressure cable pneumatic signal should be activated when switchover valve has electrical current.

4. While lightly accelerating vehicle. observe critical attention to multimeter, vacuum gauge and vehicle speed simultaneously.

- Verify switchover valve Y3/3 electrical current is switched OFF at upshift point and that control pressure cable pneumatic element vacuum signal is vented to zero.

- Upshift must occur precisely when switchover valve is de-energized, NOT EARLIER OR LATER.

5. Record vehicle speed when switchover valve Y3/3 current was switched OFF, vacuum was vented to zero and upshift occurred.

- Compare vehicle speed to chart listed below.

REMEDY PROCEDURES IF FAULT 15 FOUND WHEN TESTING

Electrical Fault: Activation of Switchover Valve Y3/3:
1. Check wiring and connections from switchover valve Y3/3 to fuel system control module.
2. Test function of switchover valve, replace it necessary.
3. If switchover valve Y313 is not receiving electrical activation signal and no, fault can be found, replace fuel system control module and retest.

Pneumatic Fault: Activation of Control Pressure Cable Pneumatic Element:
1. Verify correct vacuum line connections and vacuum supply at switchover valve Y3/3:
2. Apply vacuum (to vacuum line at switchover valve Y3/3) to activate control pressure cable pneumatic element.:

- Verify movement of control pressure cable at throttle linkage connection when vacuum applied, released.
- Verify vacuum leakage does not exist in control pressure cable pneumatic or vacuum circuit.

Incorrect Vehicle Speed At Upshift Point
1. Verify correct basic control pressure cable adjustment. Repeat road test procedures listed above, recording vehicle speed when upshift occurs. Compare to chart listed below.
2. If electrical and pneumatic functions are correct and control pressure cable is correctly adjusted, adjust control pressure cable pneumatic element at automatic transmission:

- Turn adjustment screw clockwise: shift point is at lower speed
- Turn adjustment screw counterclockwise: shift point is at higher speed

Cold Start Delay Upshift Speeds (Light Throttle) 1992-95:

1) This model does not delay the 1 - 2 upshift when cold
2) 1 - 2 upshift delay controlled by first gear start relay module k29/1 and kickdown solenoid

Cold Start Delay Upshift Speeds (Light Throttle):

1) This model does not delay the 1 - 2 upshift when cold
