Return compression springs for clutch plunger
The number of springs is determined by balancing and thus up to 2 springs less may be installed.

Transmission 722.3
Number 27
Wire dia. in, mm 0.9
Uncompressed length approx. mm 38.5

Adjustment Data
Play "A" of multiple-disc clutch in mm (see diagram) Discs compressed with 10 N - 0.7 - 1.3

Dismantling and assembling

1. Remove snap ring (11).

Installation Note
After inserting, press snap ring upwards using a screwdriver applied around its entire circumference.

2. Tilt outside disc carrier (1) and remove discs. Check inside discs for scorching and wear (reference thickness 2 mm).

Installation Note
Note sequence of clutch discs. Arrange discs according to transmission diagram and immerse in ATF for approx. 1 hour before installing. Position convex surface of dished washer on plunger.

3. Attach assembly device (020) on dished washer (4) and compress until snap ring (5) is accessible. Remove snap ring (5).
4. Release assembly device 126 589 00 43 00 and lift off.

Installation Note
Check that snap ring is correctly seated after inserting.

5. Remove spring seat (4) and compression springs (3).

Installation Note
Note number of compression springs and ensure that each spring is centered by one guide lug on the spring seat.

6. Pull plunger (2) out of outside disc carrier (1).

Installation Note

Check lip sealing rings (12) and (13) for wear and damage, and renew if necessary. Insert lip sealing rings (12 and 13) into plunger so that the sealing lips point downwards (in direction of arrow).

Place inserters (021, 022) onto outside disc carrier (1).

7. Lubricate inserters and sealing rings with ATF and carefully insert plunger (2). Press into outside disc carrier (1) without tilting.

8. Check O-ring (17) between outer multiple-disc carrier (1) and plunger guide ring (18) for leaks by filling plunger guide ring with a little kerosene or benzine. In the event of leaks, press out snap ring (16), remove plunger guide ring and replace sealing ring (17).

Measuring

9. Determine clearance "A" using a feeler gauge. Adjust clearance "A" using the snap ring (11) available in three thicknesses (2.0, 2.5, 3.0 mm). For this reason, the groove for the snap ring is machined 3.2 mm wide. Only if the prescribed clearance "A" is not achieved using the snap ring (11) must the middle outside discs be used for correction. Adjust the clearance to 0.7 - 1.3 mm.
