CHECKING VEHICLE LEVEL AT FRONT AND REAR AXLES
Preliminary operations:
General Information on chassis measurement check.
Mounting of wheels.
General information on chassis measurements:
observe.
Vehicle level at front axle:
check with measuring instrument (01)140 589 O1 21 00 (see test and adjustment values):
- Position measuring instrument (01) between front (19) and rear (20) eccentric bolts on wishbone bearings.
- Position sensing arm of measuring instrument (01) against wishbone (04) and read off plumb value for vehicle eve on instrument scale.
- If the vehicle level is outside of tolerance, adjust vehicle level by changing springs or spring rubber mounts. Adjustments
Vehicle level at rear axle:
check with measuring instrument (02) 201 589 O1 21 00:
- Position rotating arm of measuring unit (02) against inner bore of steering arm (6) designated with " (see arrow)
- Turn scale in such a manner, so that it points in direction of travel during measurement.
- Position sensing arm against rear axle shaft (11) and read off plumb value for vehicle level on scale of measuring instrument (02).
- If the vehicle level is outside of tolerance, adjust vehicle level by changing springs or spring rubber mounts. Adjustments
Caution!
On vehicles with level control do not correct low vehicle level by changing connecting rod of level control (control point), but:
1. Check level control for proper function.
2. If point 1 is okay, adjust vehicle level by changing springs or adjusting spring rubber mounts.

For the assessment of the vehicle level always check vehicle level at front and rear axles. The maximum permissible difference between the vehicle level on the left and righthand sides is:
- with measuring instrument approx. 9 mm
- with the tape measure approx. 15 mm (from center of wheel to fender cutout)

Note
After repair work on the axles or the suspension bounce vehicle forcefully a number of times on measuring platform to compensate for friction in joints and bearings.
Employ measuring instrument (01) 201 589 00 21 00 for front axle as follows:
- Position measuring instrument between front (19) and rear (20) eccentric bolts on wishbone bearings.
- Position sensing arm of measuring instrument (01) against wishbone (04) and read off plumb value for vehicle level on instrument scale.
When checking the right side of the vehicle read off the value for the vehicle level on the upper scale, on the left side of the vehicle read off the value of the bottom scale. This measuring tool also serves for checking the ball-point location.

If the vehicle level is at the limit of the specified tolerances, determine the average value for the vehicle level to judge whether correction is required:
a) Pull front end approx. 30 mm down and release, then check vehicle level.
b) Pull front end approx. 30 mm up and release, then check vehicle level.
c) Determine the average value for the vehicle level from these two readings.
Example:
Vehicle level nominal value = 30 +10/-15 mm
After pressing down = 14 mm
After pulling up = 22 mm
Average value = 18 mm
(correction not required)
Employ measuring instrument (02) 201 589 O1 21 00 for rear axle as follows:
- Position swivel arm of measuring unit against steering arm (6) of inner bearing (arrow).
- Position sensing arm against rear axle shaft (11) and read off plumb value for vehicle level on scale of measuring instrument.
For the measurement of the right and left side of the vehicle always turn and adjust swivel arm so that the scale can be read off from the center of the vehicle. Otherwise measuring errors can occur, because the values are changed from "+" to or vice versa.

Holder For Brake Pad Wear Indicator
Vehicles with ASR are equipped with a wear indicator on the rear axle as well as on the front axle. The cable for the wear indicator passes above the steering arm and is fastened to holder (12). To measure the level of the rear axle it is necessary to unclip the holder on the steering arm and remove it in order to correctly position the level measuring tool.
