Procedural Overview
Procedural OverviewFor information about special tools contained within the procedures, Tools and Equipment Actual procedures for the operations below are given in more detail in "Procedure (Steps)" and they should be used as the primary reference when performing the repairs explained within it. Procedure
Preceding work:
Removing and installing steering gear.
Removing and installing bearing cover/pitman arm shaft
Removing and installing play compensator.
A. Steering Shaft/Bearing Cover with Locking Ring (up to 10/87):
- Attach steering gear to assembly support 140 589 00 59 00 with two bolts and clamp in vise (see step number 1).
- Locking ring (15), remove from bearing cover/steering shaft. When inserting locking ring, ensure correct seating.
- Press radial seal out of the steering shaft/bearing cover with suitable screwdriver. Press in new seal with mandrel 201 589 06 15 00 and coat sealing lip with multipurpose grease.
B. Bearing Cover/Steering Shaft with Collar (as of 10/87):
- Attach steering gear (1) to assembly support with two bolts and clamp in vise (see step number 1).
- Remove, install, replace bolts (41). 25-30 Nm (see step numbers 2 and 32).
- Rotate steering shaft counter-clockwise until the steering shaft/bearing cover (12) is raised approx. 10 mm (see step number 3).
- Remove steering shaft/bearing cover (12) together with steering shaft (13) and power piston (11) from the steering gear housing (see step number 4). When installing, carefully insert straight edge of steering nut (25) into control valve (see step number 31).
- Carefully clamp power piston (11) in a vise with aluminum protective jaws (see step number 5).
- Measure friction torque of recirculating ball assembly with friction torquemeter 001 589 81 21 00 and wrench insert 123 589 00 80 00 and note value (see step number 6).
After assembling recirculating ball assembly, the measured value should again be achieved (see step number 28).
- Bolts: remove, screw in, 12-15 Nm, take off guard plate (38) and retaining clip (37) (see step numbers 7 and 27).
- Take off ball guide halves (36). When installing, insert 6 or 7 (model 140) balls (35) with grease into the ball guide halves. Insert ball guide halves into steering nut (see step numbers 7, 25 and 26).
- Unscrew steering shaft (13) from steering nut (25). Ensure that none of the 23 or 24 balls (model 140) is lost (see step number 8).
- When installing steering shaft, introduce balls into recirculating ball assembly by slowly turning (see step number 24).
- After removing 0-ring (16), screw bearing cover/shaft (12) into the retaining device 140 589 04 31 00 or 210 689 05 31 00 (see step number 9).
- Teflon ring (81) and O-ring (80) check in steering gear housing, replace, if necessary (see step number 10).
- Remove inner slotted round nut (23), bearing insert (17), needle bearing (82) and washer (22) (see step numbers 11-13).
- Pronged wrench 140 589 03 07 00
- Pin wrench 140 589 04 07 00
When installing, set friction torque of steering shaft in steering shaft/bearing cover, tightening torque of inner slotted round nut 280-320 Nm (see step numbers 17-20).
- Radial seal ring: remove, press in, replace, use mandrel 140 589 07 15 00 (numbers 14 and 15).
- Examine bearing insert (17) and teflon ring (20) for signs of damage and wear, replace if necessary (see step number 16).
- Replace O-ring (40)(see step number 29).
