1. IDENTIFICATION
2. TESTING
3. TEST SHEET

As of production 12/88, a maintenance-free battery (12 V 62 Ah manufactured by Bosch) may have at times been installed in subject vehicles. The following text provides detailed information about identification and testing of this flew type of battery.

IMPORTANT:
Never attempt to open a battery.

NOTE:
These instructions are only valid for the maintenance-free batteries described herein.

1. Identification

The maintenance-free battery (Figure 1) can be identified by the following:

- It is manufactured by BOSCH.
- It does not have cell caps.
- Markings for electrolyte level are not preeent.
- Filling instructions are not listed.
- Label on battery cover stating "DO NOT ADD WATER" and "In case of service needs see your "Dealer".
- This type battery is installed only in models 124 and 201.0 beginning 12/88.

2. Testing

A battery capacity load test is the only test possible to determine its condition. This battery cannot be tested for specific gravity and/or electrolyte level.

NOTE:
The voltmeter of the load tester should be checked for accuracy by comparing it with the reading from a digital voltmeter (e.g. SUN-DMM 5) and adjusted accordingly.

2.1 Procedure

2.1.1 A reliable and approved load tester (e.g. SUN, Vat-40) must be used to test the battery.

Load test for 10 seconds at 190 Amperes.
Minimum voltage after 10 seconds 10.0 Volts.

2.1.2 If voltage is less that 10.0 Volts, recharge the battery and repeat the load test. The charging voltage must not exceed 14.4 Volts.

2.1.3 If the battery fails to meet the minimum 10.0 Volts after recharging, replace it with a new 62 Ah battery, part no. 002 541 73 01.

3. Test Sheet

If replacement of a Maintenance-Free Battery becomes necessary, complete a Test Sheet for Maintenance-Free Battery (MBNA/MBC 2349) for each battery failing the above test, and mail copies 1 and 2 of it immediately to the address listed at the bottom of the test sheet. The battery must not be scrapped until authorization is received from your Field Service Representative. - Additional pads can be obtained from the Technical Publications Department.
