1. Servicing the Battery In the Vehicle

When servicing the battery in the vehicle, follow these precautions:

1.1. Wipe dirt, leaves, etc. off of the battery before opening the vent caps. This is especially important for the low-maintenance battery since no protection against contamination is provided. Contamination could damage the battery.

1.2. Use the correct tools for the job; terminal end puller, correct size wrench, cleaning brush, etc. Extreme caution must be used to prevent metallic tools or objects from shorting across the battery terminals, or from the positive e terminal to ground.

1.3. Always remove the negative - terminal first and reconnect it last.

1.4. Ensure that the hold-down clamp is properly positioned and tightened.

1.5. Disconnect the negative - terminal when charging the battery (please refer to S.I. MBNA 54/40 for additional information).

1.6. Inspect the area surrounding the battery for spilled electrolyte. neutralizing the spill if necessary (using baking soda solution or commercially available pre-mixed solutions).
