4. Maintenance of Batteries In Dealer Stock Vehicles

While the battery in every vehicle leaves the VPC fully charged, it will require some degree of recharging approximately every 4 weeks to maintain a fully charged state. The relatively small amount of curent drawn by some accessories, combined with normal "self-discharge", make the periodic recharging of the battery mandatory if vehicles are not driven on a regular basis. A battery which is allowed to remain in a discharged state for even a few weeks will suffer some damage.

The following maintenance procedures will help prevent battery discharge problems

4.1 It should be common practice to recharge the battery when the vehicle is first received, every 4 weeks during storage, and just prior to delivery.

4.2 Refill the battery with water (distilled or tap water) before the vehicle is delivered (part of P.D.I.) and at every service. The battery is properly filled when the water stops draining through the over-fill protection diaphragm.

4.3 Check the electrolyte level at least once every 3 months - more often in warm weather. The customer should be informed of the maintenance requirements of the battery.

4.4 Coat the positive battery terminal and connector with a thin coat of acid-proof, anti-corrosion grease or Mercedes-Benz Anti-Corrosion Wax, part number 000 986 33 70.

4.5 Keep the battery clean and dry. The battery must always be secured to the vehicle with the battery hold-down clamp.
