Steering - New Torque and Updated Components

1. Modified Drag link, Pitman Arm and Intermediate Steering Arm Mode1 124 (except 4-Matic)




As of June 1989 production, a 10 mm shorter drag link is installed in production (Figure 1). The tightening torque for the nuts M12 x 1.5 is increased to 50 Nm. At the same time the location of the steering damper mounting on the body was moved to the left side of the vehicle.

Repair Instructions

To prevent a mixup of the different versions, the bores for the drag link in the Pitman arm and the intermediate steering arm as well as the ball pins of the drag link are increased from 14 to 16 mm diameter. The track differential angle changes as a result of the shorter drag link.

Special Tool Information

2. Modified Tightening Torque of Intermediate Steering Arm Bearing
Models 107, 124 and 126

As of July 1989 production, a modified slide bearing for the intermediate steering arm is installed. As a result, the tightening torque is increased to 180 Nm. This also applies to repairs involving Model 107. In case of repairs only this new version bearing, identified by a red paint mark, is available in repair kits.

3. Uniform Steering Lock With Improved Anti-theft Protection

Models 124, 126 and 201

As of August 1989 production, a uniform steering lock with improved anti-theft protection is installed. The lock cylinders are adapted to the steering lock. The new steering lock can also be installed in earlier production vehicles in combination with the new lock cylinders. The old version cylinder cannot be used together with the new type lock, but the new version cylinder can be used together with the old type lock.
