Vehicle Speed Sensor: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Disconnecting The 10-point Triggering Unit Plug:





2. Disconnect the red 10-point plug connection of the triggering unit on the foot support.

Removing The Torx Screws (66) From The Generator Carrier:





3. Remove both of the torx screws (66) from the generator carrier so that the generator carrier is released from the contact bridges.

Removing The Airbag Unit (51) Complete From The Steering Wheel:





4. Lift the airbag unit (51) off the steering wheel enough to access the electrical connections.

Disconnecting The Plug To The Gas Generator:





5. Disconnect the plug connector (55) from the gas generator.
6. Remove the airbag unit from the steering wheel.

WARNING: Always place the airbag unit with the padded side facing "UP" in a secure area. The trunk is usually suitable for this purpose.

Internal Detail Of Steering Wheel:





7. Remove the countersunk screw (10) from the steering shaft.
8. Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft.

Instrument Cluster Removal:





9. Remove the speedometer shaft from the clip at the front cover, over the foot pedals; the shaft will move with the instrument panel.
7. Carefully slide special tool No. 126 589 03 33 00 between the dash padding and the instrument cluster and rotate 90°.
8. Pull the instrument cluster out; paying close attention to the speedometer shaft.
9. Unscrew speedometer shaft on the speedometer and remove the electric lines.

Hall Sensor Location:





10. Remove the Hall sensor (B6).
11. Reinstall in reverse order.

AIR BAG INSTALLATION:

12. With the tires pointed straight ahead and the steering shaft locked, carefully install the steering wheel on the steering shaft.

NOTE: When placing the steering wheel on the serrations of the steering shaft, pay close attention to the horizontal position of the spokes on the steering wheel, the slightly curved spoke should be on the bottom.

13. Use a new countersunk self-locking screw and torque to 59 ft.lbs (80 Nm).

CAUTION: Make sure your hands are clean and free from grease, oil, cleaning solutions and other contaminants before handling the airbag unit. Make sure that the airbag unit is not exposed to temperatures exceeding 212° F (100° C) even for a short period of time. If the airbag unit is dropped from a distance of more than 20 inches (50 cm) onto a hard surface DO NOT install the unit. It must be replaced.

Disconnecting The Plug To The Gas Generator:





14. Connect the plug connector (55) to the gas generator, there should be an audible "click" when the connector is positively engaged.
15. Place the airbag unit onto the steering wheel.

Removing The Torx Screws (66) From The Generator Carrier:





16. Install the torx screws (66) into the generator carrier and torque to 5.2 ft.lbs (7 Nm).
17. Connect the negative battery cable and check the unit with tester (No. 91-700).
18. After testing, disconnect the negative battery cable and connect the connector to the triggering unit with the ignition switched off. Install the leg support in the front wall and replace the floor mat.
19. Connect the negative battery cable.

Airbag System Warning Check Light:





20. Watch the indicator lamp at full lock-to-lock turns of the steering wheel with the engine running. Indicator light should not light up or flicker. If a problem is found, recheck your work.
21. Check the horns and combination switches for proper operation.
22. Check for any "clattering" noises by carefully striking the steering wheel on the rim.
23. Check the position of the steering wheel with the position of the front tires and, if necessary, check the alignment of the front end.
