Fuel System - Additive Recommendations

REF. NO. MBNA 00/38

TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: January 1990

SUBJECT:
FUEL ADDITIVES FOR MERCEDES-BENZ ENGINES

It has to our attention that customers are inquiring about the use of fuel additives in their Mercedes-Benz vehicles which were recommended by MB dealers.

As pointed out in our Service Information MBNA 00/32, MBNA does not presently recommend or approve any use of additives for gasoline engines. For diesel engines, only two additives are approved:

Biobor Diesel Doctor prevents algae and bacteria build-up in the fuel tank

LM Diesel Winter Flow Flow improver, prevents gelling of diesel fuel caused by low temperatures

Please advise your customers that they should fill up with a reputable brand fuel which contains additives and detergents to prevent fuel and intake system deposits, as well as keep the valves and combustion chambers clean.

The use of additional additives can cause too high of a concentration of these chemicals in the fuel, which can interfere with engine performance and lead to serious engine damage.

If engine failures can be attributed to the use of non-approved fuel additives, or excessive use of fuel additives, warranty claims will be debited upon completion of the testing of these warranty engines.
