Emissions Control - Warranty, California Vehicles
REF. NO. MBNA 00/37TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
DATE: November 1989
SUBJECT:
EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS WARRANTY
MODEL YEAR 1990 - CALIFORNIA VEHICLES ONLY
Beginning with model year 1990, the Emission Control System Warranty has been revised for all vehicles delivered in the state of California.
The California senate bill 1997 replaces the 5 year/50,000 mile warranty with a 3 year/50,000 mile warranty and requires manufacturers to provide performance and defect coverage for all emissions related components. The performance warranty makes the manufacturer responsible for all repairs on vehicles which fail the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) tests. The defect warranty makes the manufacturer responsible for repair or replacement of any emission part that is not functioning as designed. In addition, certain emission parts are covered by a new 7 year/ 70,000 mile warranty. Pages 34 and 35 of the Owner's Service and Warranty Information - 1990 booklet explain which items are included under this coverage.
The following are procedural changes to the present warranty system for claim submission beginning with model year 1990 vehicles, FOR CALIFORNIA VEHICLES REPAIRED AT CALIFORNIA DEALERS ONLY:
1. For testing purposes, the Warranty department will reguest that all items replaced under this new Emission Control Systems Warranty be returned to MBNA, 103 Sheffield Avenue, Englewood, NJ 07631.
2. A special parts return envelope (MBNA 2388) must be completed and attached to the part being returned. An initial quantity of envelopes is being supplied to every dealer as soon as it becomes available. Additional sets of 50 each can be ordered from the Service and Parts Literature department in the usual manner.
NOTE:
FOR AN INTERIM PERIOD ONLY, A SPECIAL TAG HAS TO BE USED. THE INFORMATION ON THIS TAG IS IDENTICAL TO THE ENVELOPE, EXCEPT WE ASK YOU TO STAPLE THE REPAIR ORDER TO THE TAG.
3. The warranty claim must state the damage code plus a short but precise description (e.g. poor idle with warm engine, or hesitation after cold start, etc.) of the symptom (customer complaint) and problem that caused the part to be repaired or replaced (use dealer text field on the warranty claim input). Warranty claims without description in the text field will be rejected.
