Instrument Cluster - Removal Caution

REF. NO. 54/58

TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: December 1989

SUBJECT:
DISCONNECTING SPEEDOMETER CABLE
WHEN REMOVING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
MODELS 124 AND 201

When removing the instrument cluster, the lower instrument panel cover has to be removed and the speedometer cable must be disconnected before attempting to pull out the instrument cluster. This also applies to cases where the instrument cluster only needs to be pulled out halfway, i.e. when changing a bulb in the cluster. Otherwise, the speedometer cable can be damaged resulting in complaints of vibrating speedometer cable or noise.

Warranty claims for damaged speedometer cables will be examined critically in the future. Claims will be rejected if the damage can be attributed to improper removal of the instrument cluster.
