Variable Valve Timing Solenoid: Description and Operation

Camshaft Timing Adjuster:

The intake camshaft of the 104 engine is equipped with an electro-magnetic camshaft adjuster. The camshaft adjuster enables the CIS-E 5 control unit to specifically tune the intake valve timing for improved torque, volumetric efficiency, and driveability.

Camshaft Adjustment:

When the camshaft adjusting solenoid is energized the camshaft is turned 34° of crankshaft rotation in the advanced direction. When the CIS-E 5 control unit removes the current to the solenoid the camshaft returns to its retarded position. The camshaft position sensor monitors camshaft position as an input parameter for the ignition control unit.

Camshaft Adjustment Range:

Camshaft adjustment is dependent on engine coolant temperature and on the engine load and "RPM" map which is preprogrammed within the CIS-E 5 control unit.
