Difficult Start, Vibration, Poor Power and Acceleration

05-89101 Engine at Operating Temperature or Cold, is Engine 102, 103 Revised 1/91 10/89
Difficult to Start, Vibrates at Idle, Cuts-Out
Poor Acceleration, No Power.

Affected vehicles:
Only engines 102 and 103 with hydraulic compensating valves are affected

Cause

1. One or more intake valves pulled through valve seat.

2. Hydraulic compensating elements do not move freely or are jammed in extended position.

Remedy

1. Perform compression test and/or leak down test. If the cylinder compression is less than 116 psi (8 bar), or pressure loss is greater than 25%, loosen and remove/the respective rocker arm bearing bracket. If a pressure loss value of equal or less than 10% is obtained, check if the respective intake valve has pulled through the valve seat (valve shaft is visibly longer). To do so, reinstall the rocker arm bearing bracket and measure the position of the hydraulic compensating element the intake valve (remaining lift).

1. If the remaining lift is zero, the intake valve has pulled through the valve seat: In such cases, remove cylinder head and replace all intake valves and seals (Regional approval required). Check for seized valve guides, replace if necessary. Remove all carbon deposits on piston crown, combustion chamber and air intake of cylinder head.

2. If the intake valves were not pulled through, check the hydraulic compensating elements do not move freely or are jammed in the extended position, replace if necessary.
