SUBJECT:
Mounting Screws For Camshaft Lubrication Oil Pipe
Models 124, 126 And 201 With Engine 103
Figure 1:
As of July 1991 production phase-in, the mounting screws M5X10 (1) for the camshaft lubrication oil pipe (2, Figure 1) are installed with thread locker - Loctite 642.
The use of adhesive prevents the screws from loosening by themselves.
When performing valve train repairs or diagnosis which require the removal of the oil pipe. the oil pipe mounting screws must be reinstalled with thread locker - Loctite 642. (Thread locker must also be used in engines prior to production phase-in).
The following factors must be considered when reinstalling the mounting screws:
^ The threaded bores MS in the rocker arm bearing brackets 1, 2 and 5 (bearing brackets 1 and 5 in older engines) must be carefully degreased. Residue from adhesive used previously does not have to be removed.
^ Apply one drop of Loctite 642 into each threaded bore.
Figure 2:
^ Attach oil pipe with new mounting screws M5X10 (1, Figures 1 - 2) and tighten to 6 Nm.
^ Do not start engine for at least 15 minutes after tightening screws (curing period of Loctite).
^ In the case of older engines, the oil pipe (2) is only attached with two screws M5X10 (1) at rocker arm bearing brackets 1 and 5 (Figure 2). A retaining plate (4, Figure 2) must be installed in these engines if not already equipped (see Service Information MBNA 05/3a, 18/7a, April 1989, point 1.4).
The retaining plate is attached with the screw (3, Figure 2) for rocker arm bearing bracket 3 (tightening torque: 21 Nm). When installing the plate, do not use a washer and do not use Loctite on screw (3, Figure 2).
