Figure 1:

Engine with the chilled cast iron camshaft and rocker arms with carbide inserts are recognizable by the letter "S" stamped onto the exhaust side of the cylinder head (arrow, Figure 1).

In case of repairs only the chilled cast iron camshaft may be installed.

Figure 2:

When installing the chilled cast iron camshaft and rocker arms with carbide inserts into earlier production vehicles, a modified ignition distributor rotor bracket (11) and T30 M 7x26 torx head screw (16) must also be installed. In vehicles produced prior to 4/86, the camshaft gear (19) and its three mounting bolts should also be replaced due to en change in the mounting bolt bore size from 6 to 7 mm (Figure 2).

The camshaft, rocker arms with carbide inserts, and modified ignition distributor rotor bracket with torx head screw must be installed together at the same time.

Also inspect the rocker arm shafts for damage or wear and replace if necessary.

Ensure that the cans are properly and completely lubricated during installation to prevent any "dry running time" after shifting the engine. This precaution applies to any camshaft installation.

Figure 1:

After subsequent installation, mark the worst side of the cylinder head with the letter "S" as shown in figure 1.
