SUBJECT:
SPECIAL TOOL FOR MECHANICAL CHASSIS ALIGNMENT MODELS 124 AND 201
Check bore "K" was eliminated in production on above models. Therefore a special tool, with a central check bore "K" is now available for chassis measurement and alignment work on vehicles with bolted on transmission tunnel crossmember (Figure 1).
The distances between check bores "k" in the frame tunnel are as follows:
Model 124 = 240 mm
Model 201 = 200 mm
The previous special tool 124 589 13 63 00 for model 124 is no longer available. It is superseded by the new version with movable mounts (Figure 1). This special tool is fastened to the locations "k" by means of tapered-thread bolts.
Note:
Presently used special tool 124 589 13 63 00 should be retrofitted with tapered-thread bolts since the plastic expanding rivets do not work satisfactorily.
Mounting and Measuring Instructions
1. Align vehicle longitudinally by placing weights as needed. To check level position of vehicle, mount leveling gauge on front door sill, as shown in Figure 2.
Measures taken at points V4, H3 and H10, with vehicle not in level position, will result in incorrect dimensions.
2. Screw tapered-thread bolts into check bores "k" only until firmly seated (never tot he hex. head). When attaching the tool, ensure that the bubble of the spirit level is centered. The tool can be leveled by using the four adjustment screws. To stabilize the tool against the frame floor, all four adjustment screws should be used.
3. Apply MB zinc dust paint and MB underfloor protection to check bores "k" after removal of the special tool and tapered-thread bolts.
