NOTE: The 2nd version differs in the
- modified routing of the cables of the control unit under the heater box to the right as far as the passenger's footwell.
- modified location of the red 10-pin plug connection from the foot rest to the plate located under the foot rest.
Removing:
1. Turn ignition key to position "0", disconnect battery negative terminal and cover.
2. Remove floor mat in passenger's footwell.
3. Unscrew bolt (arrow) on foot rest and disconnect foot rest.
4. Pull off red 10-pin plug connection of control unit on foot rest.
5. Push back locking device and remove covering above cable duct.
6. Pull off edge protection (arrow) in the area of the front wall pillar bottom and unscrew bolt (arrow) underneath.
7. Pull off lateral panelling in passenger's footwell rearwards.
8. Remove center console upper section (68).
9. Unscrew mounting bolts of control unit with special tool.
10. Open cable straps in the area of the center console.
11. Open cable straps in the area of the passenger's footwell.
12. Tie string to read 10-pin plug of control unit to facilitate the routing of the connecting cable through the front wall pillar during installation.
13. Pull off connecting cable from front wall pillar.
14. Remove control unit with connecting cable.
Installing:
15. Tighten bolts of control unit on transmission tunnel (tightening torque 10 Nm).
NOTE: The arrow on the control unit must point in the direction of travel.
16. Connect red 10-pin plug connection (arrow) to cable harness.
17. Connect battery, turn ignition key to position "1" and test system by means of the RS warning lamp.
18. Turn ignition key to position "0", Disconnect battery negative terminal and cover.
19. Disconnect red 10-pin plug connection (arrow).
20. Tie string to red 10-pin plug of control unit and route connecting cable through the front wall pillar with the aid of this string.
21. Check system using tester. See Test Program, Tests. refer to the section entitled "Test Instructions for Tester..."[1][2]Component Tests and General Diagnostics
NOTE:
Revised test: Test steps 2, 6 and 7 outlined in the testing procedures for this system are no longer required only after the installation of a modified control unit part number 004 820 11 10. Keep this in mind when performing step 21 of this procedure.
- Connect test coupling/plug connection, airbag, 10-pin (X29/9).
- Switch on ignition. The RS or SRS warning lamp must go out after approx. 4 s.
22. Continue installation in the reverse sequence.
23. Check system with the aid of the RS warning lamp.
C1 Reserve Power Source

After the installation of a modified airbag control unit (airbag 1/3) part no. 004 820 11 10 the following supplementary jobs will be necessary:
Table:
1. In addition to modified control unit, install either line A or line B (table) depending on what control unit was installed in the vehicle.
2. Additional Work (To be performed in addition to replacing control unit):
X29/9 Test coupling/plug connection, airbag, 10-pin
2 Plug Connector, reserve power source
3 Plug connector, voltage transformer
- Remove voltage transformer (N24) (not present in all vehicles) and insulate plug connector (3).
- Remove reserve power source (C1) and insulate plug connector (2).
- Fasten cables to existing cable harness using cable straps.
- Test airbag system using airbag tester, part no. 126 589 10 21 00.
