DATE: April 1989 (supersedes 09/7, Feb. 1989)
SUBJECT:
ENGINE 603A PERFORMANCE COMPLAINTS
MODELS 124 AND 126 MODEL YEARS 1986 AND 1987
NOTE:
Use Work Instruction # 237 that was included in service information MBNA 09/7 dated February 1989.
We would like to emphasize that correct procedures must be followed when diagnosing performance complaints on engine 603A.
The following tests should be performed:
- Turbocharger boost pressure test, DE-04.11
- Trap oxidizer test (back pressure), DE-04.13
- Visual inspection of trap oxidizer and turbocharger (see Work Instructions 237)
- Any other engine management system test as required
Until further notice, 603A trap oxidizers which have to be exchanged should continue to be scrapped by Zone Technical Personnel.
NOTE:
The use of non-approved fuel additives may damage the trap oxidizer resulting in severe engine power loss and expensive repairs not covered under the vehicle warranty.
The Work Instructions contain important procedures on how to inspect turbochargers in order to reduce the number of turbochargers unnecessarily exchanged.
