Ticking Noise/Ign. Timing Does Not Maintain Adjustment

05-85011 Ticking Noise at idle and Lower rpm Range Engine 102 1/85
(Similar to Valve Ticking) or Ignition Timing
Does Not Maintain Adjustment

The ticking noise is especially noticeable in the area of the ignition distributor drive.

Cause:
The retaining plate (189) for the axial location of the intermediate sprocket shaft (191) is missing, loose or the pressed on intermediate sprocket (191a) has moved forward (increase of the axial play).

189 Retaining plate
191 Intermediate sprocket shaft
191a Intermediate sprocket
195 Screw, M5 x 18 mm

Remedy:

1. Remove the ignition distributor.

2. With a screwdriver, try to move the intermediate sprocket shaft (191) on the teeth of the ignition distributor drive gear (191b) back and forth (nominal axial play 0.034-0.12 mm/0.001-0.005").

3. If the axial play of the intermediate sprocket shaft (191) is more than 0.5 mm/0.020", the following remedies should be performed dependingon the findings. Remove timing chain cover.

a. Retaining plate (189) is missing. Install retaining plate.

b. Retaining plate (189) is loose. Retighten screw (195). If the retaining plate is still loose, retap M5 thread in cylinder crankcase (deeper).

c. The intermediate sprocket (191a) moved forward on the shaft. Replace intermediate sprocket shaft assembly.
